Woes, Wishes and Warm Hearts

Amy Grant
Now, I'm not much of a country music fan, so I'm not very familiar with Amy or to what degree she is involved in this program or whether she is merely hosting it. I didn't even realize that Amy had received five Grammys for her records. All of that really doesn't matter because she is warm hearted, attractive and seems sincere as the host of "Three Wishes" which is shown on NBC Friday evenings. Amy, like the rest of her cast of helpers, has been involved in many charities. She has a great group that gets everything accomplished unobtrusively without a bullhorn or shouting like the folks at Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

The Cast With Credentials
Carter Oosterhouse is a handsome man with a winning smile who guided his team and landscaped one of the families' gardens beautifully. I am sure he can do a great many more things just as effectively.
You may recognize him from "Trading Spaces" or as the 'handyman in residence' on the "Today" show. He has even charmed Oprah on her show, and we all know she has a 'thing' for hot handymen. He is also very active in several charities for children.

Eric Stromer is a contractor and easy on the eyes. He has a great personality and a warm heart. He has also appeared on "Clean Sweep." Now he is helping to interact with deserving people as the show travels to different towns across the U.S.A. He is multi-talented man which includes being a singer/songwriter who has written and performed for television shows and films.

Diane Mizota is the 'inside' person. She hosts "Trading Spaces: Boys vs. Girls" which combines her love of interior design and children. She is a California girl and UCLA graduate and has appeared in many TV shows. She is also a mentor to fifth graders in her spare time.

What I truly like about all of them is that they are people-oriented and spend a lot of time doing, listening and giving encouragement when most needed. They show empathy without breaking down, well, except for Eric, who sometimes can't help himself. He gets a bit emotional.

The Show
I truly am not a fan of shows where I feel manipulated to the point of having to squeeze out a few tears with each sad story that unfolds. I'm pleased to say that although I felt touched by the needs and peoples' stories, I didn't have to put up with the histrionics of Ty Pennington, the overwhelming dramatics with the various crews and the time constraints. Maybe this is due to the more measured pace and structuring of "Three Wishes," or just watching something for the first time and really liking it. This means I'll watch it next Friday and so should you.

Three separate stories are told and are interwoven with one another throughout the episode. Ergo, three wishes. The latest show was two hours long and I have to admit that the time flew by because I was so caught up in it and also used my fast forward to skip the commercials. That always helps to keep the flow going. There are enough product placements throughout, with Home Depot, J.C. Penney and local businesses.

Brookings, South Dakota
This town was chosen as the epicenter of good deeds for this installment. Every wish takes place right here in Brookings, a town of just under 20,000 and the home of South Dakota State University.

The Logue Family
We are introduced to the Logue family. Bill, a 37-year old father of five kids has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and doesn't have much longer to live. This is tragic, yes, but the family is so positive and supportive that Bill's wish is for their needs to be met after he is gone. His wife Jackie is concerned with her husband's failing health as well as his disappearing smile which she loved so much. Bill doesn't have much to smile about these days, but her plan is to have a reunion with all of his friends, past and present in order to bring it back even for a little while.

All of this is achieved with the help of a largely unseen crew and Amy takes us along as she plays card games with the kids and appears very genuine as they enjoy themselves.

Meanwhile, Carter has transposed the backyard into a spot of beauty and comfort with a special place for Bill to sit and enjoy his loving family. This was one of Bill's many plans before he got ill.

Bill makes a videotape for his family.....
