The Apprentice: Martha Stewart - The Finale
Much Ado About Nothing?
Commentary by Donna Emery
December 23, 2005
I never saw such unrestrained boredom in my life.
When I think of "Apprentice" finales, I think of something comparable to the
Trumptastic show that aired last Thursday. I think of Boardroom drama, and
last-minute hitches. Even in the most mismatched contests (i.e. Kelly vs.
Jen M) there is still the excitement that Trump generates. But the finale for
Martha's Apprentice had all of the excitement of an unsalted cracker, and
all the suspense of a stale knock-knock joke.
Certainly, Martha's choices didn't have the panache of the Donald's, so that
may have been part of the problem. But the contest had the potential of
resulting in a suspenseful contest, and a resultant celebration. Bethenny
and Dawna each had a charity event - just like Donald's finalists. Each
were faced with challenges to overcome - just like Donald's finalists. And
Martha has shown that she knows how to plan and throw a festive party. But
there was little festivity, and even the champagne toast looked falsely
cheerful.
The episode started off in a familiar way. Like Donald and his Viceroys,
Martha traveled in a limo with her trusted advisors to the finale. For this "Apprentice", the finale was held at the studio where Martha films her daytime show. As the live audience cheered, Martha introduced the finalists and reviewed their designated tasks.
At the Liz Claiborne fashion show, Amanda was getting ready. But the Liz
executive was a tough person to please, and her standards were very high.
Amanda struggled, but she couldn't seem to please her. Dawna fretted that
she was "the toughest executive I've ever met." But, in the end, Dawna
realized that she and Sarah had to trust Amanda to work out the kinks, and
to meet the 9am deadline.
At the circus, Bethenny finally realized she had a show to put on, and
gathered the disgruntled performers. She offered them pizza, and told them
she would help them get ready for the show. The man in charge began to
thaw, and saw that they were off to a good start.
Dawna realized that they needed the fashion show's programs finished in
time, and worried about how they would be able to do that. She insisted on
going to the fashion show site, and brought the team with her.
The circus was to feature a VIP party, and Carrie had been assigned to be in
charge of this. But Bethenny had given her only the bare bones of
instruction about the party, and she again fumed about Bethenny's lack of
talent. Still seething, she turned to teammate Jim for help. He commented
that Bethenny was falling apart. Although Carrie had no loyalty to
Bethenny, she realized that her reputation could be served by doing a
creditable job and she didn't want to fail. Together, they began to plan
some of details of the party.
Bethenny didn't seem phased by her teammates' consternation. She said she
had a master plan, and felt that the task would come out well.
All of the work of both teams began to pay off, as Amanda finally finished
her "run of show" photos, and felt like she was ready for the morning. At
the circus, Carrie and Jim's teamwork resulted in very attractive programs.
But the morning revealed that the Liz Claiborne executive continued to
nitpick Amanda's fashion choices. She didn't even think that Amanda was
naming the colors correctly. Frustrated, Amanda called Dawna and admitted
that she had more last-minute changes for the program. Dawna quickly jotted
them down, but she and Sarah realized the truth: they wouldn't be able to do
the fancy program they had wanted to do, because of the volume of the
changes. Sarah marveled at Dawna's calm.
The circus program looked great, and the circus itself was very festive.
The crowds began to file in, and it looked as though the team had pulled it
off. The silent auction, which featured many of Bethenny's charity
acquisitions, raised money for the Boys' and Girls' club. Bethenny greeted
Martha, and showed off the many gifts at the auction. Martha liked many of
them, and said she wanted to win the certificate for trapeze school.
Martha and her associates then sat down, and enjoyed the circus. It looked
like a wonderful show.
