Are We There Yet?

Commentary By Matt B.
October 18, 2005
Okay, so I'll admit it: when I first heard the premise of the new Amazing Race: Family Edition I was actually kind of excited. It was something we hadn't seen before and after seven seasons of seeing couples bicker, alpha male teams dominate, and parent-child teams find new ground in their relationships (Nancy and Emily - I miss you!), seeing families of four race around the world was sure to be quite the adventure. Not that The Amazing Race isn't an exciting adventure already, but it could have been a nice change of pace. However, the execution has some flaws, so here are my version of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for the new Amazing Race: Family Edition.

The Good:
1. Kids!
At first the idea of an eight year old running around on a race that some 30 year olds can barely handle was kind of odd.
I thought that they wouldn't be able to keep up or would be so immature, loud, or annoying that I'd fear for the other children that go to school with them. Luckily, the kids remaining (Carissa and Billy) are actually tough for their age. That, and with the Weavers and Paolos running the race, they aren't high on my annoyance scale.

2. USA:
Here I Come! The Amazing Race has been pretty much everywhere in the world, but it has barely spent any time in our own backyard. So, seeing all of the USA is a neat change. I equate it to a special week on Jeopardy, like college week, in that even if you're not fond of the theme, as long as you know the original format is coming back, you can deal with it because you love the show. Also, some of the best drama comes from the airport or trying to navigate and you can do that anywhere.

3. Teammate vs. Teammate.
In the last episode we saw Hunter Schroeder hanging out with Rolly Weaver even though the rest of his team couldn't stand the sight of the Weaver family. The possibility of having team members turning against each other is an interesting one. With 2 people, if they fight or turn on each other they're pretty much screwed, but with 4 people, half can think one thing and the other half can think something completely different and they might stick around and the drama will continue.

The Bad.....
