Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is replacing Paula Abdul as the fourth judge on American Idol, Fox announced Thursday in a statement.
“DeGeneres will sit alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi and offer her own unique perspective to the contestants throughout the competition,” Fox said.
DeGeneres, 51, also announced the news during a taping of her show Wednesday. She assured fans that her Ellen DeGeneres Show will continue. “I’m going to have a day job and a night job. This is so exciting for me,” DeGeneres said.
Although DeGeneres has no music experience, she says she hopes her opinion on the Idol contestants with be fan’s point of view. “Hopefully I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you. I sit at home and I watch it…I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind.
I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person,” she added.
Abdul announced in August she was leaving show. Since then a list of celebrities, including Shania Twain, Victoria Beckham, Joe Jonas and Mary J Blige, have filled in for her at auditions. DeGeneres begins her stint on American Idol when season 9 kicks off in January.
