Episode 1 Recap by Logan Huffman
September 4, 2006
Welcome to Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama. Football is like a religion in Hoover, and the players are like celebrities. Four out of the last five years, Hoover has won the state championship, and they are on a 23 game winning streak. This year may be the year they finally become number one in the nation. But to become number one, it's going to take a lot of work. Two-A-Day practices, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, will be a key to success. There are also the pressures of the senior year of high school, trying to keep your grade point average up, girlfriends who always want more time with you, and parents who are reliving their glory days.
Meet Alex. Alex's alarm clock goes off bright and early and the radio announcer is talking about the Hoover High football team. Alex gets in the car and drives to his early morning practice.
We are introduced to Jeremy Pruitt, who is the defensive coordinator for the team. We are also introduced to Max, who is another player on the team. Max says that since he has gotten to high school, that football is his life. He says that people don't understand how much time it takes to make sure that their team is the best. They are up as early as 6 AM practicing.
Alex says that for his senior season, nothing but undefeated is acceptable. They work harder than any other team, and they deserve everything that comes to them.
We meet Rush Propst, the team's Head Coach. He said that the team had hit rock bottom when he began coaching for Hoover High, and that they were consistently losing games. He says that they have to win the championship. They have become so good that everyone expects them to win now, and losing is not an option.
We see Rush talking to the mom of one of the players. She's upset that they're mad that he was sick. Rush says that when other players are sick, that they still come to practice and vomit on the sidelines. She says that other teams win even when players are sick. He asks her who. She says that she doesn't follow football and doesn't know. He tells her that other teams don't win like they do.
We meet another player on the team, Repete. His family moved to Hoover just so he could play on a better football team. He says how important it is for him to get a college scholarship in football. He would be the first person in his family to go to college, and he wants to prove to his family that he can do it.
We learn about ice baths, a team tradition after practices. They dump ice in a trash can, and the players get in one by one. At first it kills, but after 30 seconds, it feels really good.
It is now the evening and Alex is on the phone asking if his girlfriend, Kristin, is at home. She is and he drives to her house. Kristin is a varsity cheerleader and her and Alex have been dating on and off since ninth grade. Alex says they are both pretty happy being with each other. Kristin thinks that they are a great couple because they are so opposite. She's the studious type, and he's crazy and always makes her laugh. He jumps in Kristin's pool and they swim over to the side and start talking. He asks her if she likes the necklace he's wearing. She says she likes it, and he says it will go perfectly with the tattoo he's going to get. She's tells him that she'll be mad if he gets a tattoo. He says that she won't see it. She asks him where is he going to get the tattoo at, and he says his back. She says that she'll see it when he swims. He says that he won't be swimming in December. She accuses him of not planning to be with her after December and he laughs it off. Kristin says as weird as it sounds, she thinks they were meant to find each other in high school.
We are introduced to Anna, Max's girlfriend. Max tells us that Anna has been accepted to Auburn University in the fall, and he still has one more year of high school left. Max says that he used to tell Anna how much it would suck once she went off to college and they broke up, but they care for each other so much, they just decided to try and make it work. Anna kisses Max playfully on the cheek.
All the players are now on the field and Rush is telling them that they have to practice hard to be prepared for Nease High School. Alex says that the game against Nease is going to be unbelievable, and it will be an atmosphere that none of them have ever experienced. ESPN will be covering the game. Alex says that Nease has the number one quarterback in the nation, and that this game will show what they are truly made of. Rush says that they will all be emotional and in one of the best environments they have ever been in.
We meet Ross, Hoover's quarterback. He thinks that the first game would be huge to win, since the first game of the season really sets the tone of the whole season. Rush tells us that Ross comes from a great football family. Ross's brother played quarterback at Hoover High School in the 2002-2003 season and led them to a state victory. His brother now plays for the University Of Alabama. Max says that even though Ross has big shoes to fill, he thinks that he can do it and that he is a great quarterback. Ross says that he isn't trying to chase his brother's records; he is just trying to be himself.
We are now in pottery class with Alex. He says that he is making a shot glass, but it looks more like a flat bowl to me. Alex says that Jamie, a girl in their pottery class, played a prank on Alex and Taylor (one of Alex's friends) last week by switching the books in the bags. He tells us that payback's a bitch.
When Jamie gets up to set her.....
