Episode 3 Recap by Logan Huffman
September 19, 2006
Welcome to the third episode of Two-A-Days! Last time, the Hoover Buccaneers faced off against their rivals, Spain Park, and defeated them, and Kristin started having second thoughts about breaking up with Alex, but got very flirtatious with Goose.
We begin this episode with Max and his stepfather Jim in the car. They are heading to Southern Miss University, which has given Max an early scholarship offer. Max says that they have been visiting colleges almost every weekend. Max introduces himself to people around the campus. Jim says that it's very impressive that Max has garnered so much interest from so many colleges, but he has to make a decision soon as to which one to go to.
Max and Jim stand at the sidelines and watch a practice game. A woman named Stacy comes up and introduces herself to Max and Jim. She notes that they are from Hoover, and says that she is glad to have them visiting. As he takes a seat in the bleachers with Jim, Max notes how huge the players are. Max tells us that seeing the players out there really made him want to be a part of it. Jim asks him if he likes it at this college, and he says that he likes it a lot. Jim says that Max really needs to step up his game this year, as all of the early scholarship offers are contingent on how well he plays. Jim asks Max if he could see himself running down the field naked at this college. Jim starts laughing, and Max grins.
Back at Hoover High on the practice field, Rush is yelling at the players, and telling them that they need to practice harder. Inside the school, a bunch of cheerleaders has gone into the guys' locker room. Blair comments on how gross it is, as we see Gatorade spilled on the floor, along with someone's underwear on the floor as well. Blair also says that there are "things" growing in the lockers. What a profound observation! Blair also notes that the underwear lying in the floor is tighty whities, or she says that they could possibly be whitie-tighties, but she can't remember how the saying goes. The girls confirm to her that it's tighty whities. She says that Michael's polka-dot boxer shorts are cute. Has she gone on underwear patrol? Kristin points out that Goose puts all of the spirit ribbons he buys from her up in his locker. All the girls think that's cute, including Kristin, who Blair says that she only thinks they're cute because they're from her.
Back out on the field, Rush is continuing to yell at the players (surprise!) and two of the players are doing a running exercise. Ross says that they are training to take on Tuscaloosa County this week, and they really need to step up their game, because Tuscaloosa has the potential to beat them. Rush tells them that big time players make big time plays in big time games. Rush gets mad at another player for missing an interception that hit him in the head.
Rush tells us that every single person has a flaw. Max's is that he is a bit of a clown, and has trouble focusing on the game at times. Repete's is that he can be really out there mentally, and you have to reel him in. Rush says that this is where he comes in, with handling the guys, and he has mastered the technique.
Rush gathers the guys and tells them that now is the time where they will be heavily judged on scholarship worthiness, and he has to put a highlight tape together. He says that deep in the season; their ability to play well when the competition stiffens will also be a key element. He says that the recruiter will listen to him and he can get any of their feet in the door, but he can't change the tape. He says that the colleges won't take them if they're unsure of their skills. He says that he once had a player he was a good player but didn't play hard enough one game. They asked Rush if he would sign him. He answered no, and the player's scholarship was pulled. He finishes up his scare tactic by saying that it's all about business.
The players finish up the practice and head to the locker room to change. Repete repeats (Hey, I just repeated myself!) that it would be a major letdown to him and his family if he doesn't get recruited, as this is the first chance for someone in his family to go to college. Night dawns, and Repete heads into his home. His dad welcomes him and asks him what's happening. He says that he's tired, and his dad asks what he's tired of. He says of the hard work, referring to football. His dad asks if he feels like it's really work. Repete says that it is, but sometimes it doesn't feel like it. Repete tells us that his family moved to Hoover four years ago, his dad knowing that if Repete played for Hoover, he would have a good chance of getting a college scholarship. He adds that if they hadn't moved him to Hoover, he would probably be either dead or in jail. He also says that sometimes you have to change things about yourself, even though the process may be difficult.
Repete joins his dad on their couch, and says that while he doesn't want to say he's giving up his childhood, he is giving up his social life and all of his friends. His dad says that he does have friends, but Repete says that he mostly gets dumped during the season since he doesn't have time for them. His dad laughs, and tells him that he needs to find him a girl who understands. Repete asks if that means he needs to find a girl who understands that when he gets out of practice and calls her on the phone and tells her he's tired and has to get up early the next day, she'll respond with, "OK baby, call me when you get out of school tomorrow". His dad reminds him that the ultimate goals are to win the championship and to get into a good college, and if the girl doesn't understand, then that's not the girl for him anyway. Well said, Repete's Dad. His dad adds that he thinks it's all going to pay off, and he's proud of him. They do the fist bump.
The guys are out at another practice, and Alex tells us that they are facing Tuscaloosa County this week, and if there is a local team that can beat them, it's probably Tuscaloosa, since they are the best and most talented team they will probably face. Alex says that they normally have a winning history against Tuscaloosa, but they did embarrass Hoover during Homecoming on Alex's freshman year. Alex is confident that they will win, because they are the most talented, and they work the hardest. We hear the coach compliment Max on "one hell of a play". The coach also compliments Repete on a good play. Bryan says that sometimes everyone gets overconfident, and they have to stay focused. Rush says that everyone hits a great peak, and they sometimes forget how they got there, and if they get complacent, it will come back and bite them.
Rush pulls them all to the side for a talk, and he says that while he's not trying to scare them, this will be the most hostile environment they will play in for a long time. He says that they are in the nitty gritty of good teams, and teams that really can beat them. They must really extend themselves if they want to win these games. He tells Max that he played today like he used to play, and it was like he was shot out of a cannon. Rush was very impressed with Max. He tells Repete that he thinks it was one of his best practices ever. He feels like Repete has really come and worked to be a better football player the last four days. He says that everything appears to be coming together. He finishes by saying that he really believes that they are going to come together and play well for Friday night's game.
Over at Taylor's house, Max and some of the players are hanging out and playing a football video game. Taylor says that they really have to come together and beat Tuscaloosa this week. Max says that when he visited Auburn College, a quarterback from Tuscaloosa was there and told Max that they were going to whoop their asses. Taylor says that the team really has to be ready, because Tuscaloosa is going to be ready to play. Taylor asks what they think of Ross, and Max responds by saying that he is the new quarterback, and they just don't know.
Over at Ross's house, he and his dad are watching a football game on television that they have apparently taped, recapping some of the best moves. His dad asks if he thinks about the game as pressure, or if he only thinks about playing. Ross says that he just thinks about playing. He says that he thought there would be a lot more pressure, and even though the game has gotten bigger, he doesn't want to think about it. His dad says that every day is pressure, and to just play the game.
On Friday morning.....
