The End Game
Well, perhaps not quite the end yet, but we're almost there. I predicted the outcome of Tuesday night's voting on our Staff Predictions and I thought that I was prepared for it. Yet, when it happened, I was sad. Perhaps I wasn't quite the bawling mess that Paula was, but I was a bit emotional. As Simon Cowell said on the Tonight Show, "This is a singing contest. Can you imagine what she's like at a funeral." Simon telling it like it is.
Do you all remember Paula from past seasons? There was no one more superficially cheerful than Paula Abdul. Her physician or shrink must have changed her meds, because this woman is teetering on the brink of madness. What the hell is going on with her? Yes, I was sad when Elliott got the "least" number of votes but it was only by a fraction. Paula was about to throw herself on the funeral pyre. She needs some serious help for her mood disorder.
The Show Itself
It was a charming show in that we saw our final three candidates go to their respective home towns to be greeted by adoring crowds and important officials such as mayors and governors in two cases. Our own governator here in California was much too busy learning the English language to participate in Katharine McPhee's celebration. In all honesty, I don't think anyone really minded.
In a strange and misplaced product placement for the new "X-Men 3," the competitors get a visit from Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romaine (a joke folks! I know it's Romijn). Then, during the singers' flight on private jets; they get to view the actual film before everyone else in the whole entire world except for studio bosses etc. Big deal, but more money for FOX. At least enough to pay for the expensive fuel.
Birmingham, Alabama and Richmond, Virginia turned out for their native sons to pay them homage. There were parades for the visiting heroes after which they sang for their adoring Idol worshippers.
Everyone including the respective governors were heaping praise on the two men. Whoever would have thought that being on American Idol would propel you to the A-List of celebrity status and fame? Upon his return, Taylor Hicks gets to do his finest Michael McDonald impersonation of "Taking It To the Streets." Good job, Taylor.
After his visit with the Governor of Virginia, Elliott also appeared at his last place of employment, the pharmacy, among other limo stops along the way. Upon his return he sang a beautiful rendition of "Moody's Mood for Love." One of those great songs that Elliott made sound even better.
Katharine was greeted by the Mayor of L.A. and then she visited her old high school where she was treated like royalty. Despite terrible acoustics in the gym, she sang to the students and everyone was thrilled to be in her presence. She does her guest appearances on the local FOX morning show and then talks to Kevin and Bean on KROQ to tell them how thrilled she is to be there. Back at American Idol, she does her CD song, "Think" and a little personal inclusion of Simon's name just to keep his egotistical bum kissed.
There were more commercial breaks than.....
