American Idol: Live Concert Review
Commentary by Jillian Kuras

Over the weekend, I attended the American Idol concert in Worcester, MA. I have been to the tour every season so far and even though this season's AI was probably my least favorite to date, I was looking forward to going. There were a handful of contestants this season that I really liked and I was anxiously waiting to see them perform live.
A few days before the show, it was all over our local news that Katharine McPhee had suddenly become ill with laryngitis. She missed the first two shows in New Hampshire and would most likely miss the two Massachusetts shows as well.
Needless to say I was very unhappy. For those of you who followed my AI recaps throughout all of this past season, you know that Katharine was my absolute favorite from start to finish. I think she has an amazing vocal talent and is a very engaging performer. I was looking forward to seeing her sing more than any of the other 10. I especially wanted to hear her new single Over The Rainbow.
Anyways, Katharine was not at either of the MA concerts so of course, I missed out. After paying $85 for the tickets, I was very sadly disappointed. I went to the concert with my friend, my mom, and my mom's friend. All of them liked Kat but not nearly as much as I did. So on top of everything, I had no one to pout with.
The show was scheduled to start at 7 pm but as usual, it didn't begin until about 20 past. So for those of you who are planning on attending the tour this summer, don't freak out if you are a little late. I remember them starting late last year as well so I guess it is a normal thing for them.
I was expecting the contestants to sing in reverse order so I was somewhat surprised when Mandisa was the first to come out. She started with I'm Every Woman and immediately had the crowd on their feet. After completing the song, she briefly chatted with the audience just welcoming us to the show and whatnot. Before she began her next song, she said that she would like to dedicate it to a man she has had a crush on for a few years now- Ruben Studdard. My friend Danielle and I looked at each other and we both agreed that we hoped the two would never have children together. We were joking of course.
Her song to Ruben was If I Were Your Woman which she sang very well. It started out slow and sultry but midway through the tempo picked up as she strutted her way across the stage. She then began her third song, I'm Your Angel by Celine Dion, and was soon joined by Ace Young. The duet between the two was very nicely done and surprisingly, their voices blended very nicely together.
Mandisa then left the stage and Ace continued on with his first solo song, Father Figure. This was definitely one of his best songs of the season so the crowd was happy to hear it again. Ace was looking as cute as ever and the crowd just ate him up. He removed a jacket mid way through the song and little girls in the audience went crazy.
He concluded with the song Harder To Breath by Maroon 5 and did an excellent job with it. Listening to him sing it had my thinking how great he could potentially do in the pop field. He has the look and the sound and I can see him being a very commercial artist.
Lisa Tucker came out next who I was expecting to see first. She started with the song she sings on the AI CD, Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Lisa was looking very cute in jeans and sparkly teal tank top. She made great eye contact with the crowd and overall interacted with her fans very well. After finishing the first song, she told the crowd she wanted to slow things down and a keyboard was brought out for her.
She sat down at the keyboard and played as she sang two more songs. They were both Elton John songs and Lisa said they were two of her favorite songs of all time. She started with Your Song and ended with Someone Saved My Life Tonight.
What was nice about the two songs though, especially the first one, is that she did an excellent job making them sound original. Melodically, they were different from the originals so it was nice to see that even though this is just a fun show and not a competition, that she is still concerned with pleasing her fans. Lisa was a huge favorite of mine throughout the season I think her potential is huge. I'm still really hoping we hear more from her in the future.
Also, after seeing Lisa sing I'm guessing the reason she didn't open the show was because her set was a little more subdued than the others. Opening with Mandisa was definitely the better choice.
After Lisa finished her solos.....
