Simon Cowell is trying to excuse his vicious remarks aimed at overweight and gay contestants. There really is no excuse.
On February 1st UPI ran the following story:
"American Idol" judge Simon Cowell's sharp tongue has gotten him in trouble with gay rights activists and now fat activists are joining the fray. When "Idol" hopeful Anthony Andolino, 28, was dismissed by the judges after his audition that aired Tuesday night on Fox TV, Cowell remarked: "Just as well, we couldn't afford the food bill." Sandy Schaffer of the National Association To Advance Fat Acceptance told "Access Hollywood" she found Cowell's remark "childish" and "stupid." "The show seems to be saying you can't be gay, you can't be fat, you can't be anything different," Schaffer said. "It absolutely desensitizes the audience. It starts to make you feel this is OK." Fellow judge Paula Abdul did not defend her colleague to "Access Hollywood." "He's an ass. He's a pill," she said. "He says the dumbest things sometimes."
Now Simon says it was the editing, the camera's were left on and he didn't know, it was supposed to be off the record. How many times have we said "they can't air it if you don't say it."
Simon has made excuses, but not offered any apology or even said he was wrong.
He told the Los Angeles Good Day LA television show, "The problem is that they left the cameras rolling this year. So, you know when you meet somebody in real life and they leave the room, and you say something -- we all do it -- that's what's getting me into trouble." At least he understands there is trouble. He asked the show's co-host Dorothy Lucey "Can you imagine if they left the cameras rolling on your show?" I guess he assumes everyone is as rude and petty as he is. The truth is Simon, we aren't all like you and it is just one more sign of your massive ego to think that we are.
I find it hard to believe I am agreeing with Paula, but he is an ass. And I am not at all sure I believe his off-camera and off-the-record excuses. Simon can be an idiot, but he is not stupid. He produces a number of shows world-wide, including British Pop Idol that was brought the United States as American Idol. Simon knows how things work. I'm sure he is well aware of when the camera's are on.
