American Idol 5: Episode 2
Denver's Good, Bad, and Ugly
Recap By Jillian Kuras
January 19, 2004
Welcome to night two of auditions on American Idol! Last night, season five kicked off in Chicago and tonight we continue the journey in Denver.
After some intro fluff of Ryan talking to contestants about why Denver is called The Mile High City (it's exactly one mile above sea level for those who are wondering) the auditions begin. First up is Marlows Davis.
Marlows compares himself to Michael Jackson and Usher and says he is not at all worried about making it through to Hollywood. He tells the judges he picked Fallin' by Alicia Keyes to demonstrate his vocal talent.
Just like every other first audition shown on air, Marlows of course cannot sing. He definitely has a lot of confidence though and is convinced he has a great voice with a great range. After some bickering back and forth with the judges, Marlow finally accepts his no vote and leaves the room.
Next up is Tiffany Christensen who promises to knock our socks off. I don't even know what song she's singing because it just sounds like a bunch of shouting. After this and a few more rejects, we meet our first real contestant of the night.
The camera cuts to the line outside and we see the young girl who was briefly shown in last night's season intro clip (the one in the hot pink tank top). Even though I remember loving her in the clip, it isn't until she tells us that her name is Lisa Tucker that I know exactly who she is.
Lisa was on the first season of Star Search (the new version) a few years ago. She was only 13 at the time and competed in the Junior Singer category. She made it to the finale where she competed against eventual winner Tiffany Evans. I remember Lisa and I remember how amazing she was at 13. I am liking this girl more and more! To visit Lisa's Star Search page which includes two videos of her singing, click here.
Lisa is 16 and will be singing One Moment in Time by Whitney Houston. Lisa's audition is definitely my favorite so far. Her voice is very mature and soulful for only 16 and she also performed it great.
Simon tells Lisa she is the best 16 year old they've ever had on AI, Randy says she nailed it and Paula calls it fantastic. Lisa gets 3 yes votes and she is off to Hollywood!
After the break, we find out Simon is already on his second potty break so we get to see some of the things the contestants do while they are waiting (mostly dancing around and goofing off). Included in this group is Amanda Berg who says she aspires to be Whitney Houston.
Amanda sings Can't Fight the Moonlight and it's definitely one of the most painful auditions so far. Maybe when she said she wanted to be Whitney Houston she meant Whitney the drug addict and not Whitney the singer?
Next we meet Brett "Ace" Young.....
