Jillian Kuras American Idol 5: Episode 3
It Takes Talent - No Hoochie Needed

Recap By Jillian Kuras
January 25, 2004
Welcome to week two of American Idol! Last week's audition episodes scored record breaking ratings for the show so season five is off to a good start. Tonight, auditions continue in Greensboro, N.C.

Ryan reminds us that North Carolina has produced such idol greats as Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino. The judges are shown arriving and settling in and then the auditions begin.

First up is Sabrina Oakley who refers to herself as 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' even though she is 26. Paula reads from Sabrina's bio that she enters a lot of karaoke contests, and that people tell her she sounds like Faith Hill. Today she will be singing Lean on Me.

The only good thing I can say about Sabrina's voice is that it would be good for yelling. She basically shouted her whole audition. Simon tells Sabrina that she belongs on Jerry Springer (funny, but rude) and Sabrina leaves upset.

Up next is Cachet Robinson who describes herself as a shower singer. She tries to sing I'm Every Woman and apparently, it's shouting day for everyone. Two contestants in and I already feel like I need earplugs.

After a montage of female rejects, we finally meet some good talent.

The adorable Kellie Pickler is up next. Kellie already has an interview fluff piece so clearly this is someone the producers want us to take note of. Kellie tells us she a nineteen year old roller skating waitress and she lives with her grandfather. Her mother left her when she was 2 and her dad is a drug addict who has been in and out of jail her whole life.

What is up with the sob stories this year? Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for Kellie and the fact that she has had a rough life but we've seen like, 5 of these fluff pieces so far. I feel like they should all begin with, 'Today, on a very special Oprah…'

Kellie first sings Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson and then, on Paula's request, sings A Broken Wing by Martina McBride. The first song is good and what I liked best was how she sang it in the same key as Kelly. Kelly Clarkson naturally has a strong upper register and as far as the notes go, Kellie was right up there with her. I'm not sure this song fit Kellie and her personality but luckily, she did sing another song.

Kellie's 2nd song was much better than the first. I like the country sound to her voice, which was something that didn't come through at all with the first song. She also is a fabulous performer and really commands her audience. Kellie had a strong audition and should have no problem making it through to Hollywood.

Paula says she likes her, Simon tells her she's terrific but that she over sang a little, and Kellie gets 3 yes votes. After she leaves, Simon tells the other judges that Kellie is a nice girl and he hopes she does well. Aw Simon, you big softy.

Up next is Shawn De Salazar who looks like he's on his way to prom. Shawn came with his mom and little brother and his brother says he has no doubt Shawn will make it through.

Shawn enters the audition room in a tux and with a poster board explaining why the judges should pick him. I wouldn't say that Shawn has a bad voice, but the whole audition was just weird. The tux was weird, the poster was weird, and he just seems like an odd guy.

Simon says it was.....
