Jillian Kuras American Idol 5: Episode 10
The Long Walk Of Fate

Recap By Jillian Kuras
February 16, 2006
Welcome to Wednesday night on American Idol. Tonight, forty four become twenty four as the semi-finalists are selected. The judges will be selecting 12 men and 12 women to move onto the next round. The contestants will not sing tonight; they will simply meet with the judges one on one to learn their fate. Making it to the top 24 has probably been a major goal for the remaining contestants because this is when the judges turn all their power over to America. Well, some of it anyway.

The contestants will all wait together in a holding room until Ryan calls their name. They will then ride up the elevator to the judge's room to find out if they have made or not. The night very quickly begins.

The first seven contestants to enter the room are all given no votes by the judges and thus, their journey ends tonight. Those contestants include Jessica Santos, Bobby Bullard, Brooke Barrettsmith, Nick Whitten, Stephanie White, Crystal Stark and Bobby Dillard. The only one of these seven that I recognize is Brooke who originally auditioned with her younger sister Leah. The actually had one of those really annoying and pointless fluff pieces highlighting them and their hometown. The others are all people we didn't see at all throughout Hollywood.

Next up is Katharine McPhee who I have loved since her original audition. She is shown nervously waiting and cracking her knuckles. After we see a clip of Katharine's last performance in Hollywood of My Funny Valentine, the judges give her some comments.

Randy tells Katharine that while her original audition was a stand out for all the judges, that she didn't do as well throughout the Hollywood rounds. He then tells her that unfortunately not everyone can make it. Katharine begins to cry but luckily Randy concludes by saying that she is through to the next round. Katharine approaches the judges table and all 3 judges give her a hug and kiss. Katharine tells Randy that he has some luscious lips.

Up next is hottie Ace Young. I've been so impressed with all the performances he has given so far. I just wish we would have saw more from him throughout Hollywood. We do quickly see a clip of his last a cappella performance and I think this guy has star written all over him. In some ways he reminds me of Constantine except Ace is much better looking and he has a much better voice. I can see him having that sort of an impact though.

The judges are not shown giving Ace any comments, they just tell him that he is on to the next round which of course, makes me very happy. Paula is shown fanning herself as Ace leaves the room and I can totally understand why.

We next see two more contestants being turned away- Antonio Bridges and Eugenia Littljohn. Since we have never seen either of these two I don't have an opinion on either one obviously. Eugenia is very upset by the news and breaks down into tears. She says that she is 26 with a six year old child and this was her last attempt at stardom. The judges encourage her to continue on but she tells them it's over for her.

Next up is Robert Bennett who I recognize somewhat from Hollywood but I know we have not heard him sing at all. The judges tell Robert he is through so I will be looking forward to hearing him sing next week.

Next to enter the room is my girl Mandisa. Ryan tells us that Simon made some very tacky comments about her after her original audition (regarding her weight) and they are once again replayed for us to see.

As Mandisa greets the judges she says that they may not have gotten a bigger stage but they at least could have gotten her a bigger chair. Simon immediately perks up as he realizes Mandisa remembers his rude comments. Mandisa then goes on to tell Simon that she was very hurt and upset, and that she did cry when she saw that on TV. However she tells Simon that apology or not, she does forgive him. Even though this is all very nice of her, I was really hoping she was going to let Simon have it.

Simon does apologize and gives Mandisa a hug but it doesn't seem at all genuine to me. He then tells Mandisa that she is going to have to put up with him some more because she is on to the next round. She better be!

Next up is Melissa McGhee who we have not seen at all.....
