Jillian Kuras American Idol 5: Top 10 Girls Perform
Who Are These Girls?

Recap By Jillian Kuras
March 1, 2006
Welcome to another week on American Idol! Tonight, the remaining ten women take the stage in an attempt to impress America. Just like last week, the two with the lowest amount of votes will be going home on Thursday night. After last week's show, Katharine and Lisa continued to be my two favorites. I also guessed that the top 6 girls would end up being those two plus Paris, Mandisa, Kellie and Ayla.

After Ryan re-introduces us to the girls and the judges, the night begins. He tells us that tonight each girl's intro piece will be about some of their favorite memories so far on AI.

Up first is Katharine McPhee who tells us she has developed a great friendship with her roommate, Kellie Pickler. Tonight Katharine will be singing All In Love Is Fair by Stevie Wonder.

Katharine's performance starts out very quiet and subdued and I especially like her opening runs. There were a couple sharp notes in the middle when she was going for her power voice but she ended it very nicely. The biggest difference I notice is that the performance isn't as relaxed and fun as last week. Not bad, but not her best.

Randy tells Katharine the song choice was safe and the performance was only ok. Paula calls Katharine a gifted artist but says the song choice didn't connect with her. Simon tells her that the performance was too much in her own world and the audience may find it forgettable.

Next up is Kinnik Sky who says seeing the actual AI stage has been the most emotional part for her so far. Tonight she will be singing Here For The Party by Gretchen Wilson.

Kinnik comes out in boots and a cowboy hat and I'm immediately confused. Last week she gave a classy performance with the ballad Get Here. This week is a total one eighty from that.

Even though she sang it fairly well and it was a good performance, I'm not buying it. Who exactly is Kinnik? The soulful woman we saw last week? Or this sassy country singer? She needs to establish who she is with the audience if she hopes to secure a dedicated voting fan base.

Randy tells Kinnik it was the wrong song but that he was entertained. Paula likes that she had fun but thought the song didn't show off Kinnik's voice. Simon appreciates that Kinnik tried to stand out but he thought the performance was too cutesy and like a Disney World performance.

Up next is Lisa Tucker who I must say, hasn't made the best outfit choice tonight. After she briefly talks about visiting the Kodak Theater, she takes the stage to sing Who's Loving You by the Jackson 5.

The song is another saucy ballad and I definitely think Lisa has found her comfort zone. I still can't believe the conviction and passion she sings with for only being 16. Her voice is great as well but I think it can be even better. I think we will see a lot of growth from her throughout this competition.

Randy tells Lisa the song choice was not great and that it was only alright. I think Randy needs a kick in butt. Paula says that she forgets that Lisa is only 16 and that she is amazing performer. She also says she can't believe she hasn't been signed already. Simon says Lisa will get a lot of votes but that she doesn't always need to sing grown up songs. I disagree with Simon as well; I love the songs Lisa chooses and I think they are a lot more difficult than some of the other ridiculous choices people have made so far.

Melissa McGhee is up next and she says.....
