American Idol 5: Top 12 Performance Show
Now The Real Show Kicks Off!
Recap By Jillian Kuras
March 15, 2006
Welcome to the top 12 on American Idol! Tonight, the competition truly gets down to business. This year's top 12 is a very talented one and I think the fight for the title is going to be intense right down to the final weeks. There are about 6 people I think could legitimately win and out of those 6, there are 4 that I genuinely like and agree should win
Tonight's show is two hours which is definitely a good thing. Last year, they tried to cram the top 12 into an hour show and the whole thing was just too rushed. There were some contestants we barely knew and the shorter format didn't help. So I am glad that this year, they've have gone back to the original format of two hours.
As Ryan told us last week, tonight's theme is Stevie Wonder. My first thought when he said this was that it was a horrible choice. Every time anyone sings a Stevie song on the show, all we hear from the judges (mainly Randy) is that it's tough to sing Stevie and no one should attempt his songs. So naturally, let's make it a theme!
Before the night officially begins, we see a quick montage of how the contestants made it to the top 12. Man, the producers are loving the montages this year. After introducing the contestants and the judges, and seeing a quick clip on Stevie, the night finally beings.
Up first tonight is Ace Young. He is singing Do I Do and tears up in his intro clip when he talks about working with Stevie this past week. He says he is overjoyed, overwhelmed and totally satisfied with his life today.
Ace's performance is pretty good and I think it is a strong way to open the show. The beginning of the song in particular was especially good for him. The performance was probably a little better than the vocals though and I really liked his attempt at dancing. I think this was a solid start for him but he definitely left room for growth. It's a long competition though and I think he will do just that.
Randy tells Ace that Stevie is hard to sing (surprise surprise) and that Ace's version was only alright. Paula says she totally disagrees and that it was a fantastic way to start the night. Simon says it wasn't a great vocal and that the performance was a bit manic.
Kellie Pickler is up next who says she is really nervous because country is more her genre. Tonight she is singing Blame It On The Sun.
First off, Kellie looks like she's going to prom tonight after the show. I don't know who chose her outfit, but I don't think it was her.
The beginning of the song is really rough for Kellie and her pitch is everywhere except where it's supposed to be. You can still see her nervousness which is typical for her and overall, the performance was like watching a boring beauty pageant singer. Kellie definitely made the top 12 for all the wrong reasons and I think it is more obvious tonight than ever before.
Randy tells Kellie that her performance was like a non-event that didn't happen. He says her spark wasn't there and the performance didn't work. Paula says Kellie looked nervous, out of her comfort zone, and overall was too safe. Simon says that everything went wrong tonight and she just put America to sleep. He also calls it boring and says her outfit looks like something Dolly Parton would wear.
As always, Kellie goes over to the stools to chat with Ryan. The interview is one of the oddest I've ever seen and Kellie comments on her fake eyelashes which are like tarantulas- but don't worry, they're not REAL tarantulas!
After Kellie's performance and interview, my cell phone rings and I see it is my mom. I pick up the phone and instantly hear laughing. Her comment was, 'who knew Kellie was such a dumb blond?' I don't think Kellie will loose any voters with her performance tonight, but she certainly won't gain any.
Elliott Yamin is next to sing.....
