American Idol 5: Top 10 Performance Show
No Standouts From Idols Or The Judges
Recap By Jillian Kuras
March 29, 2006
Welcome to Tuesday night on American Idol! Tonight, the remaining ten contestants will tackle songs from the twenty first century. Ryan welcomes us to the show and things quickly get under way as tonight's episode is only an hour.
First up tonight is Lisa Tucker. In her short intro clip she says that she will be singing Kelly Clarkson's Because Of You which is one of her huge smash singles from her Breakaway album. My first thought is that Lisa just shot herself in the foot before even walking out onto the stage.
Vocally the song was alright for Lisa. She did miss a few notes here and there but honestly, that's the least of her problems. Oh Lisa, where do I begin?
Not only did Lisa choose a song by one of the hottest artists in America right now, but she probably chose the most difficult and personal song off of the album. I'm not sure if Lisa realizes it but Kelly wrote this song when she was sixteen about the pain her father caused her throughout her childhood. I understand that Lisa is a fan of Kelly's but is this a song she can really relate to?
The song is so personal and so heartfelt, and since Kelly has been so honest about her past, it was impossible for me to believe Lisa when she was singing. Every time Kelly sings this song you can feel the emotion behind it. All you have to do is watch the video to understand it. I'm a huge fan of Lisa's and I think her potential is enormous but I can in no way defend her performance tonight.
Randy tells Lisa she chose a huge hit song by a former Idol winner and only did an alright version. Paula says it was a tough choice and that Lisa can definitely sing however, she says Lisa should have added more originality. Simon says the song was too big for Lisa's voice and that parts were painful.
Up next is Kellie Pickler who has chosen Suds In A Bucket by Sara Evans. Kellie briefly explains the story behind the song and then takes the stage.
Performance wise, this is not a good night for Kellie. If it's possible, I think her performing has gotten worse over the last few weeks instead of better. The judge's were so harsh on Carrie last year and yet they have never mentioned anything to Kellie. To me watching Kellie is like watching paint dry. Her expression is always blank and she might as well be singing the ABC's.
Vocally, Kellie was only average tonight but that's how she always sounds. She and Bucky need to open a bar together so they can be the headlining act each night. I don't think Kellie can sing, she's incredibly boring to watch and I think it's sad she has a fan base as big as she does.
Randy tells Kellie he didn't like the song choice and that she's better than the song. Paula agrees that the song didn't show Kellie's range or personality. Simon says it was a gimmicky, lassoing rodeo song.
Up next is Ace Young who has chosen Drops of Jupiter by Train. I love this song so I'm excited for this one.
Ace looks great tonight and I think performance wise, he does well every week. Vocally though, I think he's done better in the past. Tonight's song was nice, but I think Ace is a heck of a lot better than nice. I thought he could have added a lot difficulty to the song and the whole thing just left me wanting more.
