American Idol: No Love For Brandon - Sanjaya Is Safe
Episode 21 Recap by Jenny Lane
March 15, 2007
Last week on American Idol, we lost Jared, Antonella, Sabrina and Sundance. I hope you're all over the fact that Sundance is gone and Sanjaya is still around. Personally, I completely understand what America sees in Sanjaya - a sweet, kind, humble kid who doesn't deserve to be slammed on a zillion websites. If you read my commentary on last week's results, you know how I feel about the subject, so I'm not going to go through the whole thing again.
It's March 14 and it's time for the first results show with the final 12. I mention the date for a personal indulgence…to wish you all a "Happy Pi Day!" (March 14 is 3/14, and Pi is, you got it, 3.14). Ok, you can stop rolling your eyes now, I'll get on with the show.
Ryan opens tonight's show and promises it will be a great one. Diana Ross will perform live, and there's the American Idol challenge, which for the life of me I can't remember the details of. The judges say hello, and Simon has traded in his t-shirt for a white button-down shirt, which is unbuttoned about three buttons too many. Speaking of the judges, what is going on with Randy. I know he had gastric bypass surgery a while back, and he was looking really good for a while, but now he seems like he's bigger every night.
Last night, the girls and the guys performed together for the first time and we saw just how much stronger the girls are this year than the guys. The performances were on the big stage for the first time, which proved to be a challenge for some of them. Diana Ross was on hand as this week's mentor. She did a great job with all of the kids and seemed like a natural nurturer.
No love for Brandon.
Brandon started things off with "You Can't Hurry Love" but forgot some of the words, which is always the kiss of death. Haley sang "Missing You" and also forgot some of the lyrics to her song, and that song doesn't have all that many words to it! She realized her mistakes, and was in tears as the judges delivered their comments. Haley looked like Katherine McPhee's double, which could be why Simon gave her the nicest comments of the three judges - he did have McPheever last season.
Phil sang "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." It's time for me to suggest an intervention for Phil. When I first saw him in the auditions, I remember thinking that he was a good looking guy. Then when I saw him in Hollywood, I thought maybe he was sick, or sleep deprived with the newborn baby at home. But over the past few weeks, I think he is looking more and more like a cancer patient or someone in a zombie movie, neither of which is a good look for an American Idol hopeful. I read an article somewhere that said he has been working out to try to look better on TV, but something is going really wrong.
Gina sang "Love Child" and got positive comments from Randy and Paula, but not from Simon. Chris S. sang a very strange arrangement of "Endless Love" which was hated by all three judges. Blake also changed his song's original arrangement and sang "Keep Me Hanging On." His comments were also negative, but not as bad as Chris' were.
Stephanie sang "Love Hangover" and Chris R. sang "The Boss." Sanjaya sang "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and while he did try to make it his own, he got a little lost on the big stage. Lakisha sang a great "God Bless the Child" and Jordin was maybe the surprise standout of the night with her version of "If We Hold On Together" which I have to admit is one of my alltime favorite songs. The judges gave said that her performance was enough to make her one of the top contenders for the finals.
But the show stealer was Melinda singing "Home" which brought Paula to tears/sobs/sniffles, much to Simon's amusement. Melinda did fantastic on the big stage, and instead of letting it swallow her up, she looked comfortable and confident.
It's time for my favorite.....
