American Idol: The Top 7 - They Gave Us Something To Cheer About!
Top 7 Results Recap by Donna Emery
April 19, 2007
This week on American Idol, Sanjaya's joke on the American audience finally wore thin.

I guess Vote For the Worst will have to find a new standard-bearer.

The show began with Ryan talking about a "look" that Simon had given to Chris Richardson last night. Simon had criticized Chris for his singing, which he'd called "nasal". Chris had replied that "nasal" is a song style, and that he'd done it on purpose. After that, Simon had turned to Paula and had a hushed discussion with her while Chris went on. Chris' next remark was that his heart was with the families of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre, and all that had shown after that was a sarcastic-looking glower and eye roll from Simon. Ryan said that the show had received calls saying that it looked like Simon was being disrespectful of the victims.

Ryan showed a clip of the exchange, and allowed the audience to hear some of Simon's discussion with Paula. The clip wasn't didn't let us hear every word, but everything that was heard showed that Cowell was still intent on talking about Chris' deliberate choice to sing in a nasal fashion.

Simon said, "I may not be the nicest person in the world, but I would never disrespect the victims of a tragedy like this."

Enough was finally enough.
Next was a quick review of Tuesday night's performances, and we got to enjoy - or not enjoy the aspiring Idols' performances again. Ryan then went to "people on the street" to see the reaction.

When he asked who they'd liked, a woman said she liked Melinda, because she is so "humble." Another person mentioned that Blake is their favorite. When he asked who people are worried about, he named Lakisha. He said she hadn't done as well.

Ryan met a man who looked somewhat like Phil - because he is bald. He next talked to a girl who agreed with him that Jordin has an amazing voice, and could win the whole thing. Another said that Chris didn't do well, and that "the guys don't have it this year." One woman said that Sanjaya shouldn't be in the final seven. She went on to compare Sanjaya to William Hung.

The Final Seven came out and sang a group number called "I'm All Right." It was an upbeat song, but I think it was pretty dull. Everyone sounded good, though.

Ryan asked each of the Idols what sort of music was their personal favorites. Melinda said that she liked Freddy Hammer, and Kirk Franklin. "Gotta get my Jesus songs every day," she said. Phil said he really liked Willie Nelson. Sanjaya said he'd been downloading lots of country songs this week. Lakisha said she listens to Yolanda Adams. Jordin said that she loved "Fergie's" new CD. Chris held up a CD featuring former guest/mentor Peter Noone and his band Herman's Hermits. He jokingly plugged the CD.

Ryan went on to introduce the guest singer. To Jordin's delight, it was Fergie! She did a number called "I Hope You Know". She has a very sultry voice.

The weekly Ford commercial featured a song called "I Ran." They were dressed like spies and did a sequence that looked like it came from a spy movie. Sanjaya looked really good in the get-up.

Ryan talked about next week's show, which has been called "Idol Gives Back." He said there will be lots of stars, including Pink, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. He said there will also be a mystery duet.

After the clip about the charity show, Ryan said he will split the Idols into two groups. He said that one of the groups would be "safe", and that the other group will be the Bottom Three. He told Sanjaya, Lakisha and Blake to go to the right side of the stage, and Chris, Jordin and Phil to go to the left side. This left Melinda standing alone in the middle. He told Melinda she is "safe". He also told her that he wanted her to pick the group that she thinks is "safe" and go and join it. Melinda looked miserable. She chose to sit on the floor; squarely in the middle of the two groups. The crowd - and the Idols loved this. Finally, Ryan told her to slide over and join the group that included Phil, Jordin and Chris. He told the audience that all four of these contestants are "safe."

So, the Bottom Three.....
