American Idol: Antonella "Horrified" By Sex Scandal
Report and Commentary by Ron Lemon
February 27, 2007
This story is not going away. Briefly bringing you up to date:
Last week revealing photos or American Idol finalist Antonella Barba surfaced on the net. They were not very explicit. On Friday more photos were found on the web. These were very explicit showing Antonella performing oral sex on an unidentified male.
Now Antonella's friend and fellow Idol auditioner Amanda Coluccio says not all the photos are of Antonella. She says the tamer shots of Antonella are real. She specifically sites a photo of Antonella fully nude but covered with rose petals and says that picture was taken for her long time and now ex-boyfriend. She doesn't mention the photos showing Antonella kissing other girls while topless or the ones of her topless on a beach with several other girls. All of these photos were posed in such a manner that her breasts are not revealed. They really are pretty tame.
But the photos showing Antonella having sex are not her according to friend Amanda who told nj.com "The really bad ones aren't her. I've studied them. It's not her nose. She's never had (acrylic nail) tips in her life. She's the least slutty person I know." She goes on to say "She's been crying. She's horrified. She's most upset about what her parents think."
"Antonella" in a tame pose.
Whether the photos are Antonella or not is not all that relevant. People believe they are. In the world of the famous and the infamous it is perception that counts.
What will all this do to her chances on American Idol? Producers have had little to say about the situation and there has been nothing, yet, that indicates she may be pulled from the show.
There will be those who will deliberately vote against her because of the scandal. But there will be those who will vote for her because of the scandal. She is being touted by Vote For The Worst as the "most entertaining train wreck" and there are those who will take their advice and vote to keep her on the show. And there is no doubt a huge block of young teenage boys who will be giving her their votes.
A survey currently running on Reality TV Calendar seems to support her. While 28% of those responding say "Her private life is not worthy of being an American Idol", 72% responded that "Her private live should be private" or "I really don't care".
Other than close friends and family no one really knows how Antonella feels about all this. She must honor her contract with American Idol which stimulates that she can not talk to the media until she is off the show.
Will that happen this week? Maybe, but I would be surprised if it did. Let's face it, her popularity and that of show will go up because of all this. And that is why the powers that be at American Idol will not take her off the show. And I don't think they should. It's up to America and America loves a sex scandal.
