American Idol: Antonella Barba - Porn Idolgate Won't Go Away Soon
Report and Commentary by Ron Lemon
March 1, 2007
This story, like the girl herself, has got legs. It's not going away soon and I am beginning to suspect there is nobody happier about it than Antonella and the American Idol producers. Whether you have a problem or not with the photos that have turned up on the internet you are reading about it and probably talking about it. And that makes them happy.
Antonella's performance last night was, in my opinion, nothing short of abysmal. She might get a part in a High School musical, if she was lucky. But she is not going to be a singing sensation. She just does not have the talent. Again in my opinion, she should be going home tonight. But she won't be. The scandal has made her popular.
She will get votes from lots of young guys who think she is hot. You should see the email I am getting on that subject. Really guys, I don't need your fantasies. The same goes for the couple of girls who felt compelled to tell me all about it.
She will get votes from people who think there is really nothing wrong with what she did and want to support her because of that belief. Actually, with the exception of the photos taken at the War Memorial I agree with that. But I think it is a rather stupid reason to vote for somebody in a singing competition.
Antonella is going no where.
She will get votes from people who actually think she is the best of the girls. Yeah, they are out there. And of course she will get votes from family, friends, and people from her local area.
She's is not going anywhere tonight. According to DialIdol she received the third highest number of votes last night. Beaten only by Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones.
Like I said there maybe no one happier about this whole situation than Antonella and the producers. And I'm not the only one who sees it that way.
Writing for the National Ledger Jo Ann Way reports:
"Fox News host Shepard Smith said on Wednesday afternoon that he believed that American idol hopeful and internet photo princess Antonella Barba would have her chances boosted by the nude photos that have been released and posted all over the Internet. The afternoon host even alluded that he believed that perhaps a 'friend' may have released the photos to create a buzz. A shocked Jane Skinner (another Fox host that appears with him on Shepard Smith's "Studio B") asked the host if he had any proof. While Smith had to finally admit he had none, the exchange notes the skepticism of the scandal that has hit American idol."
Ms. Way goes on to say "Certainly there will be folks that have never watched American idol tuning in to see Babra perform and if she hits the right notes she certainly will gain even more attention."
She's right.
