American Inventor: Ed's Group Of Three - Episode 6 Recap

Episode 6 Recap by Gayl Killough
April 21, 2006
This week on American Inventor we are treated to another two hour special. Most of the first hour is footage that has already been shown. The second hour featured the first group of contestants trying to reach the final four.

There was at least some new footage in the best of the best auditions hour. When I auditioned, I noticed that large was the way to be noticed. However, one can go really large. There is no way that a particular guy from the Denver tryouts was able to fit his creations into any audition room. I don't really understand the inventions, but the judges look like they are visiting an amusement park of inventions. They take a field trip to where he lives and everyone looks to be having a great deal of fun. The inventions are not the type of stuff to be sold in retail markets. Maybe the cooler thing could be sold retailed. Really large inventions. This was also the type of footage that I was more expecting to see in the earlier rounds of the competition, although I knew that any show involving Simon Cowell would concentrate on making fun of people.

Speaking of making fun of people, making kids cry for the sake of television is a new low in my opinion. I realize that the show is not responsible for how kids react to disappointment and being told no is part of growing up, even for the best. Still, for the round that was shown on television, everyone, including the kid inventors thought them were being chosen for the Hollywood round and got their hopes up by being selected to participate in Hollywood. The show highlights kid inventors that showed up to audition. There is a new footage of a girl inventor. She is ten year old Amanda Montes. They list her occupation as student. How cute. She mentions my favorite word when it comes to inventions, interchangeable parts. She has basically a craft kit, although I am betting that most viewers of this show would not consider it to be that. She has interchangeable decorations that can be used to decorate shoes. I think she has an idea that would be enjoyed by many girls her age and a few kids at heart as well. Her idea is more inventive than a lot of so-called craft kits that I see packaged in craft and department stores across the nation. It is more of a design concept for crafts than a true invention idea. It is the start of an invention, although I am not sure if she can take the idea much further. I love how complete and detailed her thoughts were about each and every part of her idea. This is the type of thinking that is necessary to create inventions. She is the real deal of an inventor in the making. I really want her to continue with her ideas, although I expect that her desire to invent is as necessary as breathing for her, and that she will have to invent new items.

Ironically, her idea reminds me the most of all, out of everyone, that I have seen of my own idea that I auditioned with. If she starts applying the same principle to objects that are not within the normal parameters of crafts, she will be thinking exactly like me. I apologize, but I keep making this show about myself, even though I am sitting at home watching instead of participating.

My ideas start out very similar to hers, but I keep going and going further with the idea. Then I keep going further and further beyond that point. After it seems like there is would be no point to keep going, I keep going and going even beyond that point further. It continues on and on like that. Actually, I have never stopped yet on any particular worth while idea. That is my personal road to inventions and I suspect it is a similar experience for other inventors. Since I presented a craft kit for this competition, I am afraid that my idea looked more like a cute design concept for crafts instead of an invention. My invention idea was not the craft itself, but the invention was in the solution to provide a way for people to make crafts in new ways that currently do not exist.

At first I was totally freaked out that a 10 year old girl inventor reminded me the most of myself. I call myself an honorary tween, I guess I really am. Then it dawned on me that since my target niche for inventions is tween girls like the inventor, it makes sense. I wish that my target niche was bigger, but I cannot change the current market, only to try to find my place in the current market if I want to be marketable. I have been concentrating on inventions that I hope would appeal to girls just like her and all kids at heart. Maybe this is some type of proof for me to realize that I am on the right path for my target niche of tween girls. Either that or I have learned so much from taking with tween girls that I really have become one. Here it is that I was going to try to behave and not make this competition, all about me while writing this recap. However, I have such empathy for the contestants and they all seem like versions of me. People on television usually seem more distant to me, but I relate with inventors. I hope the girl realizes that she is on the right path, just to keep on going and going.

There is also new footage of my audition friend. He is Jahnesta Horney and he is only 12. I wish they would show how brilliant he truly is. He blew me when I had the chance to talk to him. He was on the quiet side though. His godmother Gail did most of the talking. The host of this show would take the low blow and mention that he was thinking in a way that no 12 year old kid should think. They don't bother to mention that his dad is the military and that he was only trying to help. His motives were completely pure. The video footage that he shows was completely done by himself, no one did anything for him or initiated anything either. I have no doubt that he will do great things in his life.
