American Inventor - Wizballs, Racers And Multi-Bras
Episode 4 Recap by Gayl Killough
June 28, 2007
Kristie Miles, 39, with a car seat cover that includes a series of vibrators to soothe a baby. That is all that is shown of her.
Deryk Artioli, 11, student with a foam incline that will keep a baby's head raised so that a baby does not fall to end of the crib. The product might possibly work really great when brand new, but I have some safety concerns because over time foam breaks down and the foam is so very close to the baby's face in the arrangement shown in his prototype. In contrast, if a baby is laying on its back, even on top of an old worn out foam mattress, there is still some air space between the foam mattress and the baby's nose and mouth. There is a slogan on baby safety ads that states something like "nothing in the crib but the baby". It is also true that there are many baby products on the market that essentially cradle a baby up close too, but those products are used by parents when the parents are awake and have supervision over the baby. However, I do think his idea is worth seriously pursing keeping in mind the safety issues and he is only 11, wow, I am highly impressed.
Craig Forrest, 28 and David Moeller, 28, a Harvard Business school graduate student and a MIT graduate student in mechanical engineering with a bicycle storage device called "The Claw". They are cute too. Ok, I am fine now with all the attention shown to the female beauty pageant winner since there were several cute guys in this episode. Plus they all had really great ideas. Well the guys at least. I need more proof on the bra idea before I am convinced, but I hope they are all worth the hype. Actually, I would rather have the show be focused on the inventions completely, I don't need cute guys to look at during any episode, it is just the concept of balance that comes to mind because all the attention that was focused on beauty pageants in the middle of an invention show annoyed me to me the point that it still bothers me later in the episode.
Concerning the Claw, traditionally when one has to hang a bike overhead on a hook; one has to pull the bike in several directions before the bike is either secure or free from the hook. They did a really great job of demonstrating the problems with a traditional hook and overall had the best demonstration of any I have seen on the show so far in both seasons. The clasp requires only that the bike is held in the jaws of the claw, the bike storage device, and it automatically secures on to the bike. Plus, one does not have to balance the bike carefully and look for the hook while holding onto a heavy bike. I love this idea. Peter does not and votes no, however Pat really loves the idea. They get 3 yes votes and they are finalists.
Ann Marie Bryan, 41, filmmaker who is currently deaf, grew up in a family of musicians. She can still enjoy the vibrations of music and wants to share the experience of music with everyone through a wearable vest. Peter says that finally the fantastic idea that he has been waiting for has arrived. She gets 4 yes votes.
Since the show is almost over, it is time to announce the top three finalists for New York. They are The Claw, The Wingman, and Wearable Music System. That almost sounds like a cool title for a movie or a book. The Claw is the winner and was my vote. I assume that Peter got outvoted. The audition city winners are surprised to find that families and friends have been gathered to greet the winners outside after they are announced. They winners do look really surprised to see the people outside.
The top three finalists for Chicago are Wizball, Xpert Racer, and the 6 in 1 bra. Outside waiting there are people that look like they are related to Cato, the bra inventor. The bra is indeed the winning invention.
For all the teasing about New York not having a worthy finalist, I liked all three of the New York finalists better than the top three finalists from Chicago. I personally liked the Xpert Racer track the best out of Chicago, plus he really needs the money to pay back his debts. His sob story is not enough of a reason to vote for someone, but his sob story was more of sob story to me than growing up poor in low income housing sob story. Enough of the sob stories already, however I know that the finals are going to be just full of heartwarming moments for me too look forward to. I might even miss the good ole days of bad auditions during those future heartwarming moments.
The next two episodes will be the audition cities of the south, Tampa and Houston.
