American Inventor - The Top Six Are Selected
Episode 6 Recap by Gayl Killough
July 19, 2007

George Tucker, 63, and Denise Tucker, 55 with "EZT4U" a tea adapter that can fit in any coffee maker that uses a swing out basket. They did not get a sob story introduction, but they have a great product. I would buy this product because I am a major tea drinker and this would save me money. I do remember that there have been products before that have somewhat tried to adapt a tea maker and coffee maker into one product, as I own one collecting dust in my pantry. I have seen some attempts at this, but I think the difference is I can see evidence of several stages of thought for this product. They have a patent on their device and they have really though the development of the product to make it adaptable to all swing out basket type coffee makers. They get 4 yes's from the judges.

Bobby Lee Grissett, 54, cafeteria manager, with a 54 square cutter for cakes mainly, but can also be used for cornbread and brownies. Makes perfect sized portions every time, which is critical for many food service outlets. I have seen some cheap plastic attempts at this product, but his product is so much better made than anything I have seen and his experience really aided the development of the product. He says that an old-fashioned ice cube tray inspired him. George and Sara say yes. He gets no's from Peter and Pat because they do not think it has enough mass-market appeal. My only question is really whether or not there is anything else on the current market that competes with this. I think Peter and Pat are underestimating the mass amount of restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, shelters, and food service outlets in the nation that could purchase this?

Christopher Khanoyan, 20, with his mother Linda Khanoyan, 48 serving as his interpreter. He is also shown at his home in his introduction. As a deaf person, he misses out on conversations that take place by hearing people all around him. He misses out because he has to concentrate on watching his mother interpret what is going on. He wants to be able to go up to a pretty girl that he does not know and be able to instantly talk to her. He wants to interact with the world around him. Ok, this sob story is really getting to me. I really appreciate being able to understand the isolation that he feels from his perspective. His invention is called "The Voice Inside" that relies on combining several current technologies into a device that would use voice recognition to translate the conversations around him into text on the portable hand held device so that he could read in text what people are saying around him and also he could vocalize the text that he types so that a deaf person could approach anyone. George and Sara say yes. Pat thinks it has too long to go in terms of development. Peter eventually says yes and he is a finalist within Houston.

The three finalists within Houston were the inventions Wrap Away, Voice Inside, and Wall Banger. The judges are shown debating the merits of each of the inventions. Sara favors the Voice Inside but Peter and Pat think it has too long way to go and would need more money than $50,000. I agree with George, that the money might go a long way too. Since all of the pieces of the Voice Inside exist, it might be enough money. The judges are concerned that the Wall Banger does not have a mass market. George's favorite is the Wrap Away and Sara and Pat agree that they would buy the drawer version of the product. I think that mass-market volume appeal and readiness of a product won out in the end and the brother who are the same age without being twins are the Houston finalist with Wrap Away.

The three finalists within Tampa were EZT4U, Reid Building Blocks, and Easy Mower. I remember how charming Furney was and it finally clicks what his invention is about. The handle allows the lawn mower to be driven like a car. I don't know why I did not understand that during the last episode. I had already forgotten about the Reid Building Blocks. I do really want these blocks to do what Reid believes that they will do. Once again, I think the fact that EZT4U is ready to go and has an instant market gives it the edge. I guessed when it was introduced that it would be one of the audition city finalists and I was right this time. EZ4TU is the Tampa finalist. I am also glad that they won without a sob story, or is the show simply saving that for a later episode?

All six of the audition finalists have been selected now. The contestants will demonstrate how they each used $50,000 to further develop the inventions. I feel like I am on a roll, because I also guessed correctly that judges were going to pick a top 3 out of the top 6 before the audience can vote on the contestants. So, the judges will choose the top 3 winners and then the audience will finally have a say and will vote for the winner out of the top 3 in a few weeks from now.

I am guessing that the judges will select the top three by end of the next episode, and then a week or two for the top three before the audience votes for the final winner. I assume that it is safe to say that the last episode will be the finale where the top winner is announced. I also predict more sob stories in the final episodes.

This episode concluded the audition round of American Inventor for season 2.
