America's Got Talent: But Is It Worth A Million?

Episode 1 Recap by Jacob D.
June 22, 2006
Welcome to the first season of America's Got Talent! A place where people of all ages, sizes, and talents can audition to become the next star. We will see singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, contortionists, and some unconventional acts. All these people are here to win $1,000,000 in America's biggest talent show.

After some clips of what we'll be seeing and the opening theme, Regis Philbin introduces us to the show. Outside of the gate to Paramount Pictures, Regis tells us that auditions have been held all across the country in search of the next big star. Cut to Los Angeles where we see various acts registering and declaring that they have talent. We get clips of a very interesting cross breed of hopefuls including drag performers, people in costumes, a yodeler, dancers, and of course, a "Jewish rapping granny."

Inside stage 16 at Paramount Pictures, we see the stage, the band, and all the contestants from the entire west coast in the audience. We are then introduced to the three judges who will decide whether these acts go through to the semifinals or not: actor David Hasselhoff, singer Brandy, and British journalist Piers Morgan. Ugh, another Simon Cowell. Piers goes on about the famous people he knows and tells the Americans to prove to him that they have talent. Each judge has a button in front of them that lights up an 'X' above the stage. Once all three 'X's have been lit, the person auditioning is done. I'm not sure if this means they're out or what because Regis said when that happens, the judges have seen enough. So let's see how it goes.

Our first guest is Dave the Horn Guy. You might've seen him in the commercials. He's the guy in the orange suit with all the bike horns on it. Will he make it? Do you have to ask? Regis also calls up other auditioners who will be performing soon which include a group of guys called "At Last", Sid the Kid, plus Bobby Badfingers. So I guess the auditioners will go in groups.

A clip introduces us to Bobby Badfingers, a self proclaimed "professional snappist." He tells us he's the only snappist in the world at that he can turn someone's day around like that (with a finger snap). He is ushered onstage to perform. The music begins and Bobby proceeds to...snap his fingers really fast along with some silly dancing in between. More of a trick than an act really. What is this guy gonna do if he wins? Surprisingly, Bobby finishes his act without any of the judges hitting their buttons. The judges love him and his energy and put him through to the next round. I'm surprised. Sure it was a neat trick, but how many different acts can you have with finger snapping? I just don't see it.

Next is the Horn Guy. He starts his act by honking the horns to the tune of "Frere Jacques" and immediately gets an 'X' from Piers. He then takes out a beanie which he says makes him "MC Dave the Horn Guy." Yikes. He starts beat boxing and honking those horns to some tune I don't recognize. I've heard it; I just can't place a name. He finishes without getting any other 'X's. Piers hates it, but Brandy loves it. Umm, what? I can understand Bobby Badfingers (to an extent), but this guy? She even says not many people can do what he did. It's not that hard to honk a horn in tune Brandy. David also loves it. Oh for Pete's sake. With a vote of 2-1, Dave makes it through to the next round. The show barely started and I am rolling my eyes. If Dave the Horn Guy can make it through, they might as well just put everyone through.

Next is a group consisting of two singing women and a man playing keyboard and they are known as "Blue Velvet." The barely begin playing and get out one line when ALL 3 JUDGES give them the 'X'. Oh, Bobby and Dave are clever and engaging entertainers, but you won't give these three a chance? Geez, I'm starting to get ticked. All 3 judges give them an immediate 'no' vote. Are these really celebrities we want choosing our talent? When a "professional snappist" and a guy with bike horns will get a resounding "YES!" and a singing trio will get an immediate "NO!", something doesn't seem right. They didn't even give them the slightest of chances!

Anyways, we are next introduced to "At Last" consisting of 4 guys: Mike, Han, DJ, and Justin. They feel they have a chance of winning because of their unique sound which they call "hiphop-a-pella". They combine old school harmonies with new school beats. They sing some 4 part harmonies with "Ain't No Sunshine." I love that song. Finally some real talent. They sound great. Then they switch it up and start beat boxing along with the song. The audience is really into it and I'm liking them too. The judges give them glowing remarks and they are off to the next round.

Next is Sid the Kid.....
