Super Names And Super Parties On America's Next Top Model 8
Episode 6 Recap by Jillian Kuras
April 5, 2007
Previously on America's Next Top Model:
Natasha found herself and her personal life the center of the other girls' gossip. Whitney and Diana felt the pressure to perform, especially after Renee questioned the possibilities of a plus-sized model. The girls received styling lessons and participated in a team challenge that saw Sarah winning. For the photo shoot, the girls were dressed as men and paired with drag queens to play gender bending couples. At judging panel, though Whitney seemed awkward at her shoot and still wasn't convincing the panel she could be high fashion, Diana was cut for her lack of passion. 8 girls are left. Who will be eliminated tonight?
Before I begin, I want to say thanks to Jillian Kuras for handling Top Model last week in my absence. Now on with the show...
The girls are riding home from eliminations and Whitney says Diana was her best friend. They were both pushing for each other to succeed. Whitney wants to show the skinny girls that she is a threat in the competition.
Tyra Mail: "Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? Love, Tyra"
After the note is read, Jael dives into some of the girls and they start to play and giggle. Renee tells us that the other girls are driving her insane. Hey look! Renee is wearing the head scarf! Jade from Cycle 6 wore head scarf's too. Separated sisters? Renee tells us that Jael just does not know when to shut up. The same can be said for Renee, only ten times so. About Sarah, Renee says, "That bitch does not deserve to be here!" Again, the same can be said of Renee, only in this case, 100 times so. Sarah says that her prize for winning last week's challenge, the photo re-shoot, helped her out and she's not going to be encumbered by her past knowledge anymore.
Lesley Hornby
The next day, the girls go to the Tantia restaurant not sure of what they are doing. In front of them is a big canvas with the name "Lesley Hornby" written on it and Twiggy walks in. I'm guessing Lesley Hornby is Twiggy's real name. Twiggy tells the girls how she earned that name. Basically, a friend gave her that name because of her skinny legs and when Barry Lategan, the man who shot her first spread, thought that would be a perfect alias for her. Twiggy says the name change really helped kick start her career and she introduces a new model who has done the same thing. Out walks Melissa Rose, a.k.a. Melrose, Cycle 7's runner-up.
Melrose tells the girls that her name is Melissa Rose, but she changed it because there are a million Melissa's. Coincidentally, one of the models from the first season of Project Runway was also named "Melissa Rose." She only went by Melissa and her full name was Melissa Rose Haro, but there it is. Twiggy and Melrose tell the girls to come up with nicknames of their own and they pass out nametags.
Whitney says she took a page from Melrose's book and combined her first and middle name (Whitney Michelle) to make "Whitelle." An odd name, but unique. Sarah isn't as creative and decides to just use her middle name, "Moe." Sarah Moe? Ummm, sure. Brittany says she's always gone by "Brit." Jaslene decides not to change her name and I don't blame her. I'm sure there are fewer "Jaslenes" running around than "Melissas." Jael also decides to keep her name. Natasha says she was called "Nata" when she was little, so she goes with that.
Doesn't she know that "Nada" is slang for "nothing?" Dionne talks about a program her mom watched where an Indian girl was married off to a 40 year old man. Dionne says she likes to date older men so she names herself after that girl, "Wholahay." I love Dionne. Also, I would've spelled it "Hulahei." Renee calls herself "Nayien." She says it retains her old name and is spelled in a cool way. Darn it! I love that name. Curse you, Renee! I mean, Nayien!
Twiggy then tells the girls that they are going to a party and will be meeting some very interesting people. Of course, models-in-the-making need some pointers on how to act. The first rule is to be eloquent. The second is not to monopolize conversation and the third is to be humorous. Hearing those rules, I first think of Whitney because I think Whitney is eloquent, humorous, and not one to overwhelm. If this ends up being a challenge, I wouldn't be surprised to see Whitney win again. In the limo ride home, Renee blurts out that she can't wait to have some stimulating conversation and Jael takes offense.
Tyra Mail: "It's gonna be a hot night! Time to try out your new name and shine bright. But beware the funky cold medina.- Love, Tyra"
Oh lord, is Tone Loc going to be there.....
