Jillian Kuras But Can They Sing? Episode 1
To But It Bluntly, No They Can't

By Jillian Kuras
November 1, 2005
Welcome to the series premiere of But Can They Sing? Tonight we will meet the nine contestants, the judges and the host. After America votes tonight the three contestants with the lowest amount of votes will be sent home. After an intro clip of the contestants singing Old McDonald, we meet the host Ahmet Zappa.

Ahmet comes running out, slapping hands with the front row, while the band plays. It reminds me of a Jay Leno entrance. Ahmet next introduces us to the three judges who will also serve as the vocal coaches and choreographers. They are Rachel Riggs, Jackie Simely Stevens and Tony Michaels. The first contestant we meet tonight is Morgan Fairchild.

Morgan is of course known for her roles on Dallas, Hotel, Falconcrest, and many, many others. She will be singing an updated version of These Boots Are Made For Walking.
And based on the look on her face, I would say that the contestants do not get to pick their own songs. After seeing a clip of her working with the experts, it's back to the stage. Morgan looks good tonight and I can't believe how great she looks for her age. The performance was fun and she looked like she was having a good time, especially with her dance moves. However she basically sang the entire song in one note. But can she sing? Not really.

Tony says it started out slow but that it ended better. Rachel says she was amazing and that she liked the extra moves she threw in and Jackie says she had no idea Morgan was a rock star.

Next up is Michael Copon. Michael has most recently worked on One Tree Hill however he began his journey as an actor as the blue Power Ranger. Tonight he will be singing I Don't Wanna Be by Gavin DeGraw. Michael is a good-looking guy however I look at him and automatically imagine him saying, "It's morphing time!"

Michael tries to rock out as much as he can. There were sometimes when I would think he wasn't all that bad. Other times he sounded down right scary. But can he sing? Nope.

Rachel says it was amazing and Tony says that Gavin would be proud. Somehow I doubt that. Gavin would have been proud when Bo sang it on AI last season. But I'm sure hearing Michael sing it made him cringe.

Next to take the stage is Antonio Sabato Jr. Antonio began his career as a model, specifically for Calvin Klein. He can now be seen on the popular soap The Bold and the Beautiful. He will be singing Every Breath You Take by The Police.

The song is shaky and horrible sounding. There are more bum notes than good ones and he is definitely the worst so far. He did a good job "acting" like a singer but can he sing? Not even close.

Rachel says that Antonio lacked connection with the audience and Tony says he wanted more from him. Jeez, can any of these people actually carry a tune?

Up next is Bai Ling who is not only a model but also and actress who has appeared in movies such as The Crow. She is given the song Like A Virgin by Madonna and immediately begins to get upset and cry. She thinks the song is too high for her and that some of the lyrics are too hard to pronounce with her thick Chinese accent.

She comes out on stage wearing a red poofy wedding dress. This video was of course one of Madonna's most famous and everyone remembers her rolling around in a white wedding dress. Since brides wear red wedding dresses in China, I'm assuming that is why Bai has decided to do that tonight.

Bai does not sing well at all and as she mentioned in her intro, she stumbles over many of the words. It is so out of tune and odd looking it reminds me of a bad AI audition. Can she sing? Definitely not.

Tony says it was hot and Jackie says that Bai sounded a little nervous and that she hopes she does better next week. Hopefully she won't be here next week and we won't have to suffer anymore.

Next to sing is Joe Pantoliano.....
