But Can They Sing? Episode 3
The Worst Of The Worst Leads The Rest
By Jillian Kuras
November 14, 2005
Welcome to week three of But Can They Sing? Last week, three contestants were eliminated leaving us with six. One more contestant will be voted out tonight. I predicted it would be Larry Holmes who was by far the worst last week.
Tonight's episode will not only feature individual performances but we will also see duets with the contestants as well. Host Ahmet Zappa tells us that the show received about 350,000 votes throughout the week. He then introduces the first duo who will be performing tonight- Carmine and Bai.
The two will be singing Summer Nights from Grease and for the first time Carmine actually has to sing instead of rap. Bai comes out in one of her typical flashy (or trashy, which ever you prefer) outfits. Carmine of course does his best to work the ladies in the audience.
The actual performance reminds me of a really bad, low budget middle school musical. From the hideous choreography, to the bad acting, and of course the painful singing, I was cringing the whole time.
Ant, who is once again a guest judge tonight, tells Carmine and Bai that he is glad summer's over.
Up next are Michael and Larry who are singing Don't Go Breaking My Heart. I'm not really sure the reasoning behind this song choice. They tried to change some of the lyrics to make it sound like they were singing about a girl but honestly, it just made the song sound like one big mess. The lyrics were confusing and of course the singing was horrifying.
Ant says his heart wasn't broken but that his ears were. You and me both Ant.
Our last duet tonight is Morgan and Antonio who are singing I've Had the Time of My Life. In rehearsal Morgan says she is unfamiliar with the song. Anyone who has not seen Dirty Dancing needs to be slapped upside the head.
The two come out in coordinating red outfits and Morgan works the crowd as always. Morgan sounds decent but Antonio was overpowering his voice way too much and totally drowning her out in spots.
Ant says it was so sexy and hot that he thinks he's pregnant.
Next Ahmet introduces us to the first solo act of the night. He tells us that Carmine had the most votes last week and that he will be singing first tonight. His song this week is You Remind Me by Usher. Carmine is immediately nervous about this choice because it is an R&B song and not a rap.
So, for the first time we are hearing Carmine's actual singing voice and I must say, it's as horrendous as I imagined it would be. It's actually a lot higher than I expected; it reminds me of a young 12 year boy who has yet to hit puberty. Carmine might someday have a career as a model or actor but definitely not as a singer.
Tony tells Carmine he was disappointed he didn't do all the moves they practiced in rehearsal. Ant says it was horrible, bad, and that it sounded like a cat caught in muffler. Oh Ant, you're killing me tonight!
Next to sing is.....
