Cheerleader Nation: Episode 5
Generation Gap - 19 Days Until The Nationals
Recap by Teri Campbell
April 8, 2006
We see Donna trying to get the girls on track at practice. It's only been 1 week since Saleem has been seen and there are only 19 days until Nationals. From the editing (I'm sure) these girls are acting like 8 year olds in a candy store.
Ryan admits that they make take advantage of her mom when Saleem isn't there because she isn't mean. Donna, on the other hand thinks everything is running smoothly. Kaitlin tells us that the seniors need to step it up because some of the girls don't look to Donna as a coach or respect her much. Gee. Why not? We get to see a very calm Donna just casually painting her nails!! Let's see. You are working with our youth and the example you set is to paint your nails AT PRACTICE?? What message does that send? Let me lay it out for you, Donna. It sends the message that it's okay to take practice lightly, as they have been doing. Ahhhh….now it all comes full circle. Ayrica just says that they need to think like Saleem. WWSD? (What Would Saleem Do?)
That night Donna and Ryan go to the food court at the mall for dinner. Ryan asks mom if she liked to be in control [at practice]. Donna just snickers and says, "Honey, I've been in control for years." Excuse me if I roll my eyes here.
The girls are trying to raise money to help them get to Nationals. This year they are holding a semi-formal winter dance. With 4 days until the dance the girls must sell as many tickets as they can. We get to meet Will, who has a crush on Kaitlin. Kaitlin likes him, just not in *that* way.
Amanda and her mom, Terri, go to the mall to buy Amanda her dress for the dance. Mom is very excited and picks out dresses that she thinks is darling, but Amanda thinks they look like dresses you wear at Easter. Then, of course, Amanda picks out dresses that mom doesn't approve of. They narrow it down to two and both seem okay with that.
Ayrica lets us in on a little secret that her dad believes he has a wicked fashion sense. Ayrica believes differently. So she walks out in this beautiful dress and the first thing *I* think is that it's REALLY forming to her backside!! So she models it for her mom and dad and even Dad says that it really fits her rump….her buttocks…her booty. Ayrica tells us that her dad thinks all boys are out to get her. All Ayrica wants is to go to the dance and have fun. Her dad says that she doesn't need to wear tight clothes. Mom says her figure is cute and wearing the right clothes will attract boys. Dad doesn't think that those types of statements should come from Ayrica's MOM. My question here is why is it that when Ayrica's dad talks he always gets subtitles?
Back at Terri's house she and Amanda are talking about the dance. You can totally tell that Amanda is 14. I teach 14 year olds and it seems like they cannot be recognized by their parents in public. Amanda tells her mom that other parents can talk to her, but not her own mom. Amanda! You are that ashamed of your mom that she can't talk to you? Shame on you! Terri reestablishes the "boundary" line between Amanda and boys. Amanda states that she will wait until marriage. I like that Terri and Amanda are so open about this. If more parent/child relationships were open like this, perhaps more of those "bad choices" Terri speaks of would never be made.
It's now Donna and Ryan's turn to buy a dress. Yet another mother/daughter pair that don't agree on fashion. Over at Ashley's house we get a sneak peek at her dress and a small commentary on why she doesn't want HER parents to go to the dance. Back at the mall Donna and Ryan finally agree on a dress. Next we see Ashley's mom meet her friends at a restaurant and talks about how she found this book and was flipping through it when Ashley strolled over to take a look. It had the whole naked body and all the parts and Ashley's mom actually started getting embarrassed. If you can't be open about PICTURES of the human body, how do you suppose you can be open to TALK about our bodies? Perhaps Ashley's mom should meet up with Amanda's mom.
