Canadian Idol: A Stone's Throw Away
Episode 18 Recap By Nickie S.
July 26, 2006

Whoever leaves Canadian Idol tonight can say they are just a stone's throw away from success. They made it to Top 9 after all; they got to sing at the John Bassett Theatre twice, live at the mansion and do all that other wonderful stuff that the Idols get to do. Sure, tonight their journey ends but hopefully it's merely the beginning of their adventure into the music industry. This is just a stepping stone after all, is it not?
Speaking of stones, last night the Idols treated us to the music of the greatest band in the world. As someone who feared that the music might be bigger than the performer I was pleasantly surprised that overall they did manage to pull it off. With the exception of Sarah, the song choices were the popular catchy rock tunes that most of the public love and with which they can identify, and they were appropriate for each performer. The judges certainly enjoyed the evening, as did the live audience. Moreover the Canadian Idol viewership seemed to enjoy it too; word around the traps overnight was positive as people were pleasantly surprised with the spins that were put on the music. But how did they vote? We have to wait until the end of the show to find out.
As expected tonight's elimination episode opens with the group medley of Rolling Stones music. I have to say that I always really enjoy the group performances; they are always fun, upbeat and the kids seem much more relaxed, even though this is a very stressful evening for them. There are no surprises in the medley; the songs covered include "Beast of Burden" and "It's Only Rock and Roll". Good performance, highlighting some strengths and weaknesses, but very short. Too short for me. Oh well.
Ben comes out with his usual shtick trying to talk over the horrible idol music. Fortunately it doesn't last long and even though we've already cast our votes it is important for us to see a recap of last night. The brief review is:
Chad sang "You Can't Always Get What You Want". The judges got what they wanted, which was distinct Chad. I didn't; I found it distinctly bad.
All the judges approved of Eva's ballad "Wild Horses" thinking it was an appropriate choice for her style. I can't disagree with that; I just don't want to see too many ballads.
Tyler rocked out with "Paint It, Black" which earned him unanimous praise for unqualified improvement. I agree. Count me in.
Sarah disappointed me with "Straight Blues"; the judges' positive comments veiled their apparent lack of enthusiasm for the performance too. I think she's in danger now.
Brandon jumped around to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and was basically told he is not good enough to remain in the competition. He wasn't good enough to be Top 22 either, but it's not his fault he's still there. And will remain.
All the judges enjoyed Ashley's version of "Gimme Shelter" although they kept mentioning something about wishing to hear more of "that" note. Since it's not a whole song of "that" note I don't see the point. It was okay I guess but I have a feeling that people are sick of her already.
Rob came out to "Start Me Up" and the judges were genuinely pleased to see him relaxed and enjoying himself. See Rob, when you enjoy yourself we all really enjoy you too. I don't think you'll have any worries this week.
"Miss You" was a great song choice for Steffi, earning her lots of judging praise for her unique approach and understanding of what she sings. I don't buy her as a "popular" entertainer, however, and can't see her releasing a successful generic, standard Idol first pop album. I wonder how many others feel the same way.
Craig held the coveted.....
