Canadian Idol: There's No Broadway In Nashville

Episode 26 Recap By Nickie S.
August 23, 2006
It is elimination night once again on Canadian Idol which means it is time to watch another performer get bucked from the competition. This is always a sad time, and I can't imagine how particularly difficult it is for those involved, but it is the way the show works.

Tonight we will be treated to a live performance by Martina McBride, apparently the reigning country superstar according to Ben. I'm sure she'll be enjoyable and we'll be able to see her put her own advice into action.

I'd like to mention at this point that whilst I've been enjoying the performances of the mentors I am disappointed that we seem to have lost the group numbers. I realize the idols get to sing with their mentors but it's not quite the same as watching them sing and dance to a medley of songs. I've always said this is a great learning experience for them and I'm sorry they are now missing that.

We begin the show with a great performance by Martina and the kids. It was slow, sweet and heartfelt and a good lesson for all. But it's over now and it's recap time. And since I don't agree with Ben's gushing commentaries, I'll treat you to mine:

Eva sang "Here You Come Again" and tried to infuse some personality into the performance by strutting around the stage and marching in and out of the audience. Vocally she was affected every time she moved and I didn't like the strutting; I didn't feel it worked with the song. The judges loved it however, saying how pleased they were to see her infuse some personality into what she was singing.

Tyler's rendition of "Suspicious Minds" was the second performance of the night and Farley spoke what the entire country was thinking when he said it was finally an appropriate time for him to riding his invisible horse. Tyler sang powerfully but the performance was nothing startling and his constant bobbing up and down is becoming distracting and a source of comedic jokes amongst viewers. The judges believed he lived up their country night expectation; I beg to differ.

Craig's performance of "Always on My Mind" was quintessential Craig with a little more emotion than usual but otherwise it was middle of the pack stuff. If you love Craig then you will have enjoyed it. If you were willing to be won over I don't think this was the song or the performance to do it, even though the judges appeared to love it.

Steffi entertained us with "These Boots Were Made for Walking" and again, if you already love Steffi then she didn't disappoint. She was certainly quirky, stepping into her boots early into the performance and then appropriately strutting around the stage. I was amused and intrigued but I thought her vocals were extremely rough and I haven't changed my mind into thinking she'd be suitable Canadian Idol. Zack wondered that too while the other judges continued their love fest and said she was amazing.

Chad WOWED us with "If You Could Read My Mind". In Season Two Zack told Elena she was simple and elegant on Gordon Lightfoot night and Chad's performance last night reminded me of that. He was simple, elegant, charming and conveyed the emotion of the song perfectly. He didn't try to over-sing or over-power us with "Chad"; he merely sat and delivered the song as it was meant to be felt. The judges truly enjoyed it and for once I couldn't disagree with the overall endorsement.

Phew, all over before the first commercial. I guess it's time for some more Martina and a little more filler.

And the filler is more Martina who sings wonderfully, if you like that sort of slow, ballady country thing. Following her performance Ben asks her how the Idols did. She is supportive of course and says they did wonderfully and doesn't know how Canada decides their vote. Well none of us know how Canada decides the vote. That's the beauty of this show. Isn't it?

Anyways it is time for the results. So let's go to Ben for whatever it is he has to say.

Steffi is the first member of the bottom two. Then we go to the other four. Craig, Tyler, Eva and Chad. We hear all the reprises of their performances and finally Eva is announced as the other member of the bottom two.

Jake says the two people there have the most charisma. Zack talks about banging his head on a brick wall. Sass says nothing interesting. And Farley is talking about songs that don't matter much to us at this point. None of this, as far as I'm concerned, has anything to do with what's happening in the moment. So we'll wait in anticipation for the final commercial break to learn who is leaving tonight. In the meantime, I admit I'm a little surprised to see Eva in the bottom two because Eva wasn't the worst of the night by far; however Canada appears to have issues with a female winner so I shouldn't be in shock. I did expect Steffi to be there though. With four or five runs now in the bottom group I figured her time was slim.

I'm drinking wine during the commercial, in case anyone cares.

After the commercial we find out that Eva is safe. Therefore we lose Steffi. I'm not disappointed to lose Steffi. She is an entertainer. But she's not an Idol in the grand scheme of things and I'm glad she's gone, to be honest.

We get a long piece on Steffi, enduring all her pitchy performances, where she says she was born to be on stage. Well she is born to be on stage and I can't deny that. Musical theatre, here she comes. Thank goodness though, not a pop CD.

So Ben gushes over Steffi and she sings us out with "These Boots are Made for Walking" and truly endears us to her more. Nine year old armchair critic is singing the song, having learned it last night. She runs through the audience, sings better than last night, and is raised up on Zack and Farley's shoulders at the end simply because they think she's wonderful.

I should also add that the Old Codger that lives in this house and doesn't watch this show considered her a class act at the very end.

I'm glad she's gone. I was done with her for the competition but I look forward to watching her in musicals in the future.

Next week we're going to enjoy the judges' choice. I love that week. The judges usually prove to be quite smart. So I'll see you then. Hope you're as comfy as me!
