Canadian Idol: Who's Left Standing After The Standards?
Episode 30 Recap By Nickie S.
September 6, 2006
|
As another Canadian Idol elimination night rolls around we wait in eager anticipation to see which Idol hopefuls will make the final two. Will it be a Craig/Eva final? An Eva/Tyler final? Or will it be an all male Craig/Tyler final?
Monday night's episode was all about the Standards. Under the mentorship of legend Tony Bennett the Idol hopefuls learned about singing "Vegas" style. They sang songs which he had made famous many years ago. They learned about crooning and trying to hold the audience in the palm of their hand. They had to demonstrate star quality. Were they successful at it? That depends upon your view I guess.
Excitable Ben doesn't get to open the show. He merely introduces the legend in all his glory and we're treated to a performance that is none other than amazing. Tony Bennett is on stage with his band; he croons "I've Got Rhythm" and then lets his band do all the work. Guitar first, then a drum solo. And then more of Tony's beautiful smooth, sexy tone. What a delight.
The moment is then ruined as we listen to Tony sell his new album. I hate this part; I think it's sad that the only way we can get these wonderful artists on the show is when they have an album to promote. And Tony is apparently so into the show that he doesn't even know what the Top 3 is when Ben asks him how he liked working with them. It appears he thought Ben was referring to Sting and Bono!
Oh no. Break out the violins and the vomit bucket. Ben asks Tony to say hi to his dad, the ever present and not much loved former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Tony even thanks him for what he did for this country. I didn't live here during Mr. Mulroney's reign but somehow even I don't think that's such a good idea.
After the commercial Eva, Tyler and Craig sing a medley with the backing of Tony's wonderful quartet. All three kids looked great and as usual I don't want to fault the group performance (although faults there are). I find that the contestants are so relaxed and really enjoy singing with one another and we always see a totally other side to them. I will say here that of the three Tyler obviously has the lesser vocal ability for this kind of music. Both Craig and Eva sound smooth and rounded but Tyler is more grating. He lacks the smoothness of the other two.
Immediately following this is the incomparable Tony, once again backed by his quartet, singing "Kiss the Good Life Goodbye". Hopefully the idols were sitting there, learning and taking everything in because he was smooth and sexy and incredible.
Ever peppy Ben stands amongst the audience with his ever-effervescent grin, smooth helmet hair and dashing purple velvet jacket. He gushes about last night's show and raves about the record numbers of viewers and voters. Apparently it was 4.3 million votes last night. We all know that it's not a record number of voters though. Simply a select few who don't seem to have anything better to do but dial their fingers off. I guess everyone needs a hobby.
Ben will attempt to wow us with a glowing review of Monday night's Standards. Instead of his fiction, here are my facts:
Craig Sharpe sang first and third. First off he regaled us with a rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight". He was obviously nervous singing a genre with which he was unfamiliar and that did affect his performance somewhat. The judges actually picked up on this and didn't give him a ringing endorsement. Jake said the nerves showed and Sass commented that it was after halfway through that he began to rip into it. Farley believed that this was a genre with which one should have fun and therefore that's what he should have concentrated on whilst Zack just wanted to shake him. I guess that was to encourage the star potential he believes this kid has.
Craig's second song was "Danny Boy" which apparently is one sung frequently on the East Coast of Canada. The judges loved it. They felt it; they believed it and saw more of what they anticipate Craig can offer. I didn't feel it myself. When I hear that song I think of rich, deep tones which Craig doesn't offer as far as I'm concerned. It was an alright performance; great if you love Craig to begin with.
Eva was the second performer of the evening. Her first performance was a rendition of "God Bless the Child" which was certainly one of her better efforts and one of the best performances of the season. Sass said she did something only someone can do when they're born with it. I'm guessing she means talent. Farley commented that the phrasing was imaginative. Zack said that Kalan Porter is no Eva Avila. He was referring to the fact that Simon Fuller, the creator of Idol, believed that had Kalan, our Season Two crown, been on American Idol then the show would have gone through the roof. And Jake said it was enchanting.
Her second song was not.....
