Canadian Idol: The Final Two Perform
Episode 31 Recap By Nickie S.

Tonight hallmarks the final performance episode of Canadian Idol 2006. I cannot believe how the year has flown. It seems like it was merely weeks ago that I was writing about the audition shows and plowing through the Top 22 in search of my best Top 10. Now, after thirty episodes of one of Canada's favorite shows (according to Ben anyways) we are down to the final two competitors: Craig Sharpe and Eva Avila. Does anyone get goose bumps? And for the trivia buffs amongst you, this is the second year in a row that someone from Newfoundland is in the final and the first year that a contender from Quebec is vying for the title.
I have to say that I had Craig pegged as a final two contender right from the first audition show. Craig has a unique voice and style and technical competence that reflects a maturity which totally belies his years. Often, love him or hate him, it is difficult to remember that he is only sixteen years old. He has repeatedly picked difficult songs and technically sung them quite brilliantly, although sometimes his ability to emote and connect with the ne'ersayers may have been lacking.
We didn't see much of Eva during auditions and boot camp but again it was obvious to me from the beginning of the Top 22 that she would last the distance. Once Nancy did not make it into the Top 10 I had Eva picked as the most marketable of the five female competitors and perhaps the one to connect the most with younger and older viewers alike. Of the two finalists I think she has certainly grown the most in performance skills; she is gorgeous and talented with a strong, pure and delightful voice. The competition will be very close.
However its show time so I should sit back and soak it all in I guess. We begin, as usual, with the ever-enthusiastic, ever-snappy Benji. For the second to last time I am going to imagine him with a bright pink punk do - it kills the segment fairly easily. I just wish he'd do something outrageous for real. It would certainly be more entertaining.
Tonight's show will feature three performances. Obviously the kids will sing what will eventually be the winner's single which apparently was written by Chantal Kreviazuk (the mentor of the week six unplugged episode), her husband Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace and a 22 year old songwriter Gaby Moreno and will be released within hours of the show's winner being crowned (isn't it always?). The competitors will also sing a favorite song from this year's repertoire plus another song of their choice.
At this point in the show it's time to say hello to the judges who look very suave for the final performances of the season. All three men are wearing suits, although Farley's bow tie is a bit loud. I want to spin it just for fun! And I'm not sure what's going on with Sass' hair extensions: it looks like a family of mice is making a house in her hair. I believe the cave man look went out years ago. However it's the great chat portion of the show so let's listen in.
Ben: "Farley, all the judges have been big proponents of the Idols showing us who they really are. Does tonight's format give them the platform to do just that?"
Farley: "Three songs each, what more can Canada ask for…..It's going to be a fantastic evening."
Ben: "Tell us how Craig got here and what does he have to do to win it all."
Zack: "…after the auditions….I told everybody this kid was a serious contender to go all the way……The fact is after tonight it is what it is."
Ben: "What makes her (Eva) an idol finalist and what does she have to do to seal the deal tonight?"
Jake: "When we first saw her I thought she had a lot of poise. I think she's actually grown more than anybody else in the competition. One thing I did mention when I first heard her was I didn't think she showed enough vulnerability. I think she's now doing that. She continues to she'll win the whole thing."
Ben: "Months of competition come down to one hour. What are you feeling as we're about to kick this thing off? "
Sass: "I think both of the competitors need to give themselves a huge pat on the back. They're both terrific talents and amazing people with the kind of chutzpah it takes to go all the way."
Apparently it's time to find out the means and methodology behind the Idol single and we're going to begin with why it is a good song for Craig. Chantal says that it's a good platform for him to be really expressive and for us to believe his words. She really feels that the key for him is authenticity: both him and us really believing what he is singing.
Get your pens and paper out. Craig has the number one position tonight and he will begin with the unheard song "Meant to Fly". I always find that it is difficult to judge the performance of the single because usually the Idol songs are pretty lame and when we don't like the song, it's difficult to say whether we even like the performance.
Jake: "That was without a doubt, in my mind, the best thing you've ever done on this show."
Sass: "Unbelievably great…I got up, I had chills. Wow."
Farley: "To step up at this point in time in this competition the way you just did shows that you're a man to be respected for this crown. Well done."
Zack: "I only have this to say." Awwwww. Zack is moved to movement. His comment is a great, big, juicy hug.
Armchair Critic: "I agree with the judges. That was the best thing he's ever done. That was believable."
Craig benefited greatly from.....
