Canada's Next Top Model: Knocking Out The Competition

June 9, 2006
Episode 2 Recap by Brandon H.

Welcome to episode two of Canada's Next Top Model. This week, we will watch the makeovers and see what I considered to be a very lame judging challenge.

But before I get into that I want to apologize for not having my first week recap in; I had a major thunderstorm on the night of the episode and was unable to find any repeats of the show. However, I'm sure we all know by now that Sylvie was eliminated due to her bad attitude.

This week's episode starts with the girls returning from judging, where they are greeted by champagne, which is a gift from Tricia, along with a note congratulating them for making it past the first cut. The girls (of course) are happy about it, all except Brandi, who says she doesn't want to celebrate this 'small success'. After all, this was just the first cut, and she was here to win. It may be small in her current competition, but she beat out thousands of other girls, making it to the top nine is a very big deal, to modest people. I was right, this girl is very Jade.

On the other side of the spectrum, some of the other girls are absolutely shocked to still be in the house. For instance, Natalie is shocked she is still in the competition because she feels she is 'bigger' than the other girls. She doesn't look that big to me. Sisi and Tenika don't help her case; Sisi says that she "can eat whatever she wants," and Tenika states that "she just loses weight all the time." Nice one, girls.

I'll be honest here and admit I did not see the next part, as I had to do something, but I had my brother (who happened to be with me) to write notes for me. I came back to see that it said 'girl is wrapping herself up in saran wrap' (of course, there were some spelling mistakes). I was delighted to find out that Natalie was wrapping herself in cellophane to hopefully sweat some weight off that night. Hey, if that works, maybe I can give it a try.

It is now time for Canada's Next Top Model first makeover segment! The girls meet up with judge Paul Venoit and the show's head stylist, Greg Wencel, both of whom are there to oversee the makeovers. All the girls have a special seat assigned to them, except Brandi. She feels very confused about this, but Tricia tells her to sit down and the two would discuss it later.

Heather is afraid of having her hair cut off. When Greg actually cuts off her ponytail, she is completely shocked. She doesn't exactly like it, but I really hope she doesn't pull a Cassandra. While Heather complains about how her boyfriend will react, Paul and Greg point out how difficult Tenika is, mentioning that Paul ha never worked with anybody so irritating. Come on now, we know you have. Tenika looks actually very nice with her extensions and despite Paul saying that she is 'beyond diva', Tenika pulls it off, saying that she was in pain because of the extensions, but knew she had to suck it up to be beautiful.

Oh, oh! This is my favourite part; it's called 'feed the ego.' The stylists tell Brandi that she is gorgeous as she is, telling her that she didn't need a dye or cut to make her look better. Nice one, guys, let's boost up her confidence so she become Brandzilla and pull of another Jade or two. I haven't watched very much ANTM (only season 4 and 5, but not religiously), but I don't think this has ever happened. Brandi is beautiful, sure, but there's no way they can call her perfect. Still, all the girl gets is a hair straightening. They could have at least cut off even an inch of hair, and then I'd be happy.

Tricia tells her it's all about flexibility and pulls out her bun to show her hair, which is a result from it being dyed too often, which is the case with Andrea. They said that her hair was so damaged they couldn't add the extensions, so instead they resorted to having to whack it all off until they reached the 'healthy' hair. Of course, Andrea has to have a moment, crying because 'she hadn't had long hair in seven years', and was genuinely upset that she didn't get long hair. Oh boy. She leaves the chair to call her mother, still crying of course.

Much like Jade last season, Andrea takes a moment to gawk at the long hair some of the other girls were getting long and sexy hair. I don't see what the hubbub is about, with long hair, shot hair can look really nice, too, and that has been proven numerous times of the NTM series (a la Sara, from season six). Still, the Whitby girl finally calms down and tries her best to adapt to her new do.

Now, to add to my anger.....
