So You Think You Can Dance: Nigel Reminds Me Of My Aunt Martha
Commentary by Emma Brand
July 13, 2007
Let me begin this by saying that there is a reason that this will be so short: most of the results shows for this type of show are full of filler. The main highlight for me is usually the opening group dance, but tonight's was a little bit of a disappointment. Not necessarily because it was bad, but because I have been spoiled by past performances. My admiration for Wade Robson is well-documented but his first hip-hop routine was a YouTube favorite of mine by the next morning. When I try to convince my friends to watch this show, that is the clip I show them.

After that, anything was going to be a disappointment. But this one didn't measure up to the others we have seen this year either, even if you compare it to the Lion King number we saw which is the best apples to apples comparison. I also tune in to see what in the world Cat Deely will wear. She has got to have the most consistent streak of unfortunate wardrobe choices since Lil Kim was in her prime.

And as for the filler: between the time on choreographing the group dance (which was a vanity piece for the guest judge on the dance I didn't care for), and the Hilary Duff performance (where she channeled Christina's Genie in a Bottle circa 1999), there isn't much that goes on.

To illustrate the point, an entire segment was dedicated to the dancers attending the premiere of Hairspray. I am all for promotion, but I don't care what these dancers do or where they go when they aren't training to entertain me. This waste of time would be entirely offensive and I would complain a lot more, but I am the same person who sat through every single one of those group sing medleys and Coke commercials on American Idol, so I really don't have a leg to stand on in that regard.

The most notable thing besides the eliminations this episode, was that in the past 24 hours, it is clear Nigel has gotten a haircut. He now looks and reminds me of my Aunt Martha. She is a handsome woman.

I was pretty good with my predictions on the Bottom 3 Couples this week since I got two out of the three. My bad prediction was that I thought Sara and Pasha would be in the Bottom three and it was Danny and Anya instead. I was happy to be wrong about this one, because after watching the recaps and Danny's reactions to the judges, I think that guy should dance for his life every week. He just exudes arrogance like no other. The smirks and the pointed toes and the over-zealous sweating has just made me tired of him, so I was glad that he had to come out on stage and do a solo. Even if he had tripped I don't think it was going to save what was to come, but it was good that he had to come out there. Here is how arrogant Danny was: He was so sure that he wasn't going to dance for his life, that he didn't even bring a shirt just in case. The result was that he had to dance shirtless. I think Cat Deely was the only one pleased by that development.

As for the solos themselves, they were okay. If the show would cut out some of the other fluff, we could get more than thirty seconds of dancing for each of them, but that is beside the point.

As I said the other day, Cedric was done the moment he was voted into the bottom 3. They have been trying to get rid of that guy for at least two episodes. But cementing that point was that Hok got voted into the bottom 3 and danced directly against Cedric. Hok is so much better at the same style that any trick Cedric had looked lame against such a master of the trade. Again, have I told you Hok is my favorite? Add that to the idea that Danny isn't getting voted off yet and you could stick a fork in Cedric before he even took the stage. And it was clear that it wasn't even close. Even Nigel's new haircut couldn't pull off suspense. He announced it right away.

Shauna was also asked to leave tonight. That was a nice way to put it. The judges always say things like, "We are going to have to ask you to leave tonight, Shauna." I love the British phrasing like that. It is the same as my landlord saying, "We are going to ask you to pay rent this month." Yeah, it isn't a choice. Shauna is history. Since both halves of the same partnership were eliminated this week, there will be no brand spanking new couples next week. So we can look forward to next week being chock-full of people with chemistry. We already have the Lacey-Kameron relationship. Last night, it became clear that Jamie and Hok also are developing a little bit of some puppy love. Who is next? Will Dominic make a play for the inimitable La Cat Deely? This is promising to be one heck of a week coming up. See you then!
