So You Think You Can Dance: Pros Outshine The Cons
Commentary by Emma Brand
July 19, 2007
After watching the opening sequence, I was trying to figure out what I would do if I was stuck out into the middle of the stage to do one of those 8 counts to start this show. It's one of the products of having an overactive imagination, I guess. It makes me think of impossible things that could never happen. Like at my job my boss is going to come in and say, "All right, I've got a big, fat bonus for whoever can do an eight count to the SYTYCD theme song and really make me remember it." I think I would do like Lauren did tonight and play with my hat for the first half before I broke into my own rendition of the Carlton Banks move from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I may not make my boss remember it, but it would be way less embarrassing than trying to do one of those cool spins (yes, I know there's a technical term for it) some of those dancers can do. Note to self: Start wearing a hat to work. This could get me a fat check.

Right off the top of the show, I was disappointed to learn a couple of things. First, was that after this week there won't be the same couples so much as random drawings (that is "drawrings" if you are Cat Deely or Mike Myers playing Simon on SNL from the mid-90s) for partners. They are going to break up our couples. The second thing I was disappointed to see was Wade Robson sitting on the panel because that meant that he didn't choreograph anything tonight. I'm just hoping he is doing the group dance for tomorrow, but I missed the dance-stylings of my favorite homewrecker this week.

But the theme this week is going to be pros and cons because as disappointed as I was, I do enjoy this show every week. What a great mid-week treat to see Cat Deely in her bad dresses, hear Mary Murphy and her grating voice and laugh. This week was an extra special treat from Mary as she dressed like a giraffe. And of course, there is Nigel, all Aunt Martha hair cut and dentures with his British accent pimping the tour the Top 10 will go on after the season and telling us constantly this was the most talented cast in the extensive history of the three seasons of this show.

I also loved the topic for the puff piece interviews this week. It was what is the best and worst thing about your partner? So great. It reminded me of the time that Zack Morris did the video yearbook at Bayside and did all those really cheesy interviews with the girls from the school. The metaphor breaks down when you consider that I don't think Nigel and Wade are going to turn it into a dating video, but that's the feeling I get from the interviews themselves. Have I mentioned I have an overactive imagination?

The con for Sabra and Dominic was I had a hard time enjoying the Jive routine because I was so worried that Sabra was going to crack her head open on their big lift. Did you see the editing of all the times he has dropped her? If I was Sabra I would wear a helmet when I came out there. Careful, there, son! I always feel so bad for the couples that choose any type of ballroom dance because Mary, who is supposed to be the Paula on this panel can tear them apart on the technique. I thought their kicks looked great. Of course, anything besides an Elaine Benes dance from Seinfeld looks pretty good to me, so take my critiques with a grain of salt. The pro is I enjoyed their routine and it was a great way to start the show for me.

Con for Jamie and Hok was their clip package included the unneeded clip of the week, as we had the footage of Jamie tearing her foot open, complete with bloody tissues. Blech! On a positive note, it was good to see Travis from last year again. He performed my favorite dance of all time with his partner Heidi and that park bench last season.

In addition here is the interesting factoid of the night: "Mr. Bojangles" was actually in a musical. I thought that scamp Tice D'Orio was just pulling songs from nowhere, but "Mr. Bojangles" is in a musical about Sammy Davis, Jr. I heart Google! Even though the song choice was in bounds, I was a little disappointed in the dance itself because Hok is my favorite and I now think they'll be dancing in the bottom tomorrow night. More Hok to watch (pro), but I don't like him to have a chance at going home. It made me want to throw things at the television when they showed Tice all smug and smirking. You can do better, Tice, I believe in you! Stop putting my braid headed-Japanese looking-British accented-Italian cooking favorite in the bottom.

Did anyone think that.....
