So You Think You Can Dance: I'll Really Miss Hok
Commentary by Emma Brand
July 20, 2007
I was disappointed in last night's So You Think You Can Dance group routine. From the wardrobe, I could tell that Wade Robson hadn't done the choreography, and it seemed a little trite. I don't want to sound like I could have choreographed that myself, but it looked like something I would see at a local play or something. I like it when whatever dance it is, it highlights the different and unique abilities of the dancers left. This one didn't have that for me. They all stayed coupled up, kicking and spinning. It wasn't that it was bad, but there is little to tune in for in the results shows. Obviously, we want to know who is going home, and I do like it that we get to see an extra 17 seconds of solo from those on the chopping block, but the group dance can really be the highlight. This one just wasn't a highlight for me.

Cat Deely was playing the part of Captain Obvious tonight. She started the show with this little nugget of wisdom: "At this point, no one wants to go home." Okay, thanks, Cat. Like in the round of 6, she is going to tell us, "Tonight, 3 of our dancers want to go home, but you can only vote out two." And as Cat ever disliked a dance? I know it isn't her place, but come on. Everything is won-duh-fool. All of the guhls look faub-you-lous. The guys look stunning. The solos were amazing. You could literally walk out onto the stage, take off your left shoe, and throw it up into the third row, and she would compliment how well the shoe gleamed in the light on its way to knocking that old man's oxygen tank hose out of his mouth. Look, I'm only so hard on you because I believe in you, Cat. Buck up, now.

After the first couple duel, Cat revealed that Sabra and Dominic were safe which meant Danny the sweat gland and Anya-the-Man-ya had to dance for their lives. Mary pretty much told us all that she would rather die than send either of them home, and it made me wonder what that would mean for the other four people who were going to have to do solos tonight. Then I remembered that there were two other judges to consider, neither of which probably gives one whit about what Mary has to shriek, I mean, say.

I had expected Jamie and Hok to have to dance. I blame Tice D'Orio, but Hok has been "challenged" in the words of Nigel. Boo, Nigel. I love you Hok! I was so surprised that Lauren and Neil ended up in the bottom three. I thought their dance was pretty sweet. Oh well.

I thought all of the solos were very well done. The only person going into the judges' decision who I thought was 100% safe was Jamie. That girl can dance and she is quickly becoming my favorite girl. It was clear to me that Mary was out-voted. I think they may have had to give her a xanax backstage so she could sit there and not scream and tear her clothes when Nigel delivered the news. But as miserable as Mary was, she wasn't as unhappy as I was when Hok left. This is a guy who got a green card to come on this competition. Then he just gets coldly thrown to the side. So disappointing. I will never be able to listen to "Mr. Bojangles" again without hoping Tice D'Orio gets a paper cut when he opens his mail, or that he runs out of hair gel before a big date. I'll miss Hok, but I think it probably was his time to go tonight. There was no way they were going to kick Danny off and not let him go on tour. If that had happened Mary would have needed that Xanax and a Hannibal Lecter mask to get her back on stage. Until next week.
