So You Think You Can Dance: Mia Apologizes To The Marines
Commentary by Emma Brand
July 27, 2007
I loved the So You Think You Can Dance opening routine this week. I knew from the first 15 seconds that Mia Michaels had done it. My only complaint was the camera work, which seemed to jump around from what I wanted to be watching, like watching a movie from behind a fat person who is shifting in their seat a little bit. But I thought it was really cool. Especially how the dancers all came down and almost used the stage as a prop there toward the end. Very well done.
I guess Cat Deely is getting sick of people making fun of her wardrobe because for the results show this week she decided to wear some sort of flowered-bird's nest contraption in her hair. It was pretty strange. So strange that I almost didn't notice that her dress had a belt thing on the front.
And while we're on the subject of wardrobe, Mia Michaels' jacket has become the subject of some controversy since apparently that hideous monstrosity that she wore last night sported an emblem upside down. The Marines were very offended. I have no doubt that Mia didn't notice or know or have any reason to make a political statement with that emblem the way it was. She did publicly apologize for it. I was just left to wonder why she didn't make an apology for the outfit as a whole. I was offended by it because she looked utterly ridiculous.
And if Mia Michaels is poorly equipped to wear the military likeness of the Marines, so too is Nigel ill equipped to make any sort of political defense of Wade Robson. Let's not get this twisted, and maybe I can save us all some angry emails. I didn't think that Wade Robson was trying to say he didn't support our troops. I think it's pretty clear that he is against our current policy in the Gulf but that doesn't make him any less patriotic. And that's his statement to make.
I do respect him for trying to make a statement in the venue he's been given to do so. At the same time, I think Wade has taken himself a bit too seriously here. "Hey guys, paint some words on a t-shirt with these stencils I got at the craft store and then I'll choreograph you kicking around, and in the middle you get to yell.
That should bring us all some peace, don't you think? Take that, Osama! Burn in hell, Saddam!" Look, it's a serious issue, and it deserves some respect in that light.
I just think we should all lighten up a little when it comes to a dance competition show and the role it plays on such a serious stage. I doubt that this show is syndicated on Al-Jazeera. This wasn't a dance for the President or the U.N. It was So You Think You Can Dance on a random Wednesday. Let's all just settle down and ask ourselves more trivial questions like why Cat Deely wants to make the crowd say "Judges" every week. It's supposed to be for entertainment.
Once Mia and Nigel handled the potentially explosive issues, Mary came behind them and took the softball question telling us that now the judges have no say so she was "really scared that America might get it wrong." Great, so Mia has to appease the United States Armed Forces. Nigel has to explain the entire show's position on the war, and Mary is the one who is going to offend the viewers. She can't do anything right, I guess.
But the show can't stay down for long. Mika was there! And I'm pretty sure that was Sabra playing drums. She is so talented! I would like to propose that if your song has been featured in a Target commercial, you shouldn't be allowed to do it on live television. I had the sudden urge to buy laundry detergent and toilet paper at incredibly low prices. I also think if you are Mika, and you dance like that, you shouldn't go on a show that features incredibly talented dancers. He looked like a poor man's Mick Jagger and sounded worse than that. Plus, I'm pretty sure he was wearing a pair of Lacey's jeans.
Last night I picked.....
