So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 10 Go Solo
Episode 15 Recap by Jenny Lane
July 26, 2007
Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the remaining couples performed for judges Nigel, Mary and guest judge Wade Robson. Anya and Danny (Fox Trot) found themselves in the bottom three yet again, even though the judges all love them. Joining them in the bottom three were Jamie and Hok (Broadway) and Lauren and Neil (Contemporary).
After the solos, the judges were split with their votes for the girls, but Anya was the one who was sent home. The judges were unanimous for the guys, and unfortunately for me, Hok left the show last week. That left us with the top ten, who will be going on tour after the show ends.
Cat starts this week's show by introducing the top ten dancers, and plugging the tour this fall. Joining Nigel and Mary at the judging table is choreographer Mia Michaels. For the first time this week, viewers will vote for their favorite dancer, rather than their favorite couple.
For the first time, all of the dancers will perform the same solo routine tonight which was choreographed by Wade Robson. Next is a clip of Wade and the dancers in rehearsal. Wade tells them that the dance is "about peace, it's about the war, it's not anti-war, it's about peace." He had everyone paint a word like love, compassion, honesty, etc. on a shirt, and tells us that every day, everyone can create those things.

This week, the couples had to switch partners, which of course will be difficult. Going forward, the dancers will pick new partners at random each week. Lauren is first, and she chose Pasha as her partner. They got Hip-Hop as their style. Choreographer Shane Sparks says that he's a little worried because he's not sure that "Pasha can hang" and Pasha also seems concerned.
Lauren and Pasha's dance is to "Fuego" by Pitbull. They're both dressed in black, except for the dumb striped tube socks they've got on. Their shirts are black with white bones painted on them. The dance starts out with both of them on the floor, and as the music starts, they start getting up with jerky movements. The intro sounds a little like the lift at an auto mechanics shop, and that's what their movements are like too. Lauren is positioned so that she's basically sitting on Pasha's um, groin area, and as she raises herself up she bounces on him with each beat. This gets a huge scream from the audience. As the music starts, they get up and start to dance. It's a pretty typical hip-hop routine, with more familiar movements than we've seen lately. Most of it is in unison, with sharp quick moves.
Nigel says that it was a "great opening routine by Shane Sparks, Shane created human Transformers (ah, now I get it)." He tells Pasha that he's "probably the best Russian hip-hop dancer" and tells Lauren that he's glad that she wasn't eliminated, because she was excellent. Mary says it was unbelievable, and a great partnership. Mia says that when she heard that Pasha was doing hip-hop, she was "freaking out that he was going to do hip-hop, in an awful way" but he pulled it off and did excellent. She tells Lauren that she's "blowing up, and that's in a good way."
The first dancer to dance Wade's solo is Jamie, dancing to "Waiting on the World to Change" by John Mayer. Her t-shirt reads "honesty" painted on the back, and a peace sign on the back. The dance is an interesting mix of contemporary leaps and spins, and sharp hip-hop moves. I almost didn't recognize Jamie, because her hair is slicked back into a smooth ponytail.
The next solo is from Dominic, and his shirt says "Love." I like Dominic's dance better than Jamie's, and it's surprising how different they were. His dance looks less rehearsed and more natural.
The second couple tonight is Sabra, who chose Kameron as her partner. They chose Contemporary with choreographer Tyce Diorio. Tyce says that they have great chemistry and move well together. Their dance is to "Amazing Grace" sung by Crystal Lewis. It's slow and flowing, but with a few fast moves thrown in. Kameron is wearing loose white clothes, and Sabra has on a short light purple dress. There are some impressive leaps and lifts, and some rolling around on the floor too.
Nigel says that he thinks it was "really well danced, but Kameron I didn't quite believe the emotional journey, but Sabra soared." Mary agrees with Nigel, and says that she didn't see the "magic between the two of you." She tells Kameron that the extensions aren't as good as the other dancers, but Sabra is "pure perfection out there."
Mia says "Kameron, I feel like.....
