So You Think You Can Dance: The Best Talent The Show Has Seen
Episode 16 Recap by Jenny Lane
July 27, 2007
Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, the remaining dancers performed for judges Nigel, Mary and guest judge Mia Michaels. Now that we're down to the top ten, the dancers had to choose new partners. In addition, everyone had to dance an identical routine choreographed by Wade Robson. Here's what the couples danced:
Lauren and Pasha - Hip-Hop with Shane Sparks
Sabra and Kameron - Contemporary with Tyce Diorio
Lacey and Danny - Samba with Dimitry (from last season)
Jamie and Dominic - Viennese (and Latin) Waltz with Toni Reopath
Sara and Neil - Disco with Doriana Sanchez
Tonight's results show starts with a group number to "The Moment I Said It" by Imogen Heap. It's a contemporary routine that looks almost like a ballet. Everyone is dressed in black, and some of the guys are wearing less than the girls. It's filled with leaps and reaching arms, so my guess is that it's by Mia or Wade.
Cat comes onstage (with bizarre flowers in her hair that look like a wilted prom corsage) and lets us know that it was in fact Mia that choreographed the group number. Next, Mia tells us about some controversy surrounding her wardrobe choice last night. Apparently, the jacket she wore offended the U.S. Marines, because the emblem on the arm was upside down. She says that she had no idea, and "publicly apologizes and never intended to offend anyone."
Nigel has a few words to say too, about Wade's solo routine from last night. Nigel says that it was an "anti-war routine" but in fact Wade made a point of telling us that it wasn't anti-war, but rather pro-peace. Anyway, Nigel says that we're still at war, and it's important to note that "nobody is pro-war, and to say you're anti-war doesn't mean you're not patriotic and you're not supporting the troops." I think that's exactly what Wade said last night, but apparently he was criticized about the routine today, because he says that there were no intentions of offending anyone, and he apologizes if anyone was offended.
Our guest performer tonight is Mika, here to perform "Love Today." He looks and sounds like a younger, cuter Mick Jagger. Everyone in the band is dressed 80's style, and I wonder how many of the people in the audience actually get that he's copying someone's style.
Cat brings out the girls first for some results. After a review of last night's performances, we find out that Jamie (my prediction to be eliminated) and Lauren got the lowest number of votes for the girls. Both of the girls will perform solos later in the show, but the solos are basically meaningless. The girl who got the fewest number of votes is the one who is going to be eliminated tonight.
Next, Cat brings out the guys. This time Danny isn't in the bottom, and for the first time I actually like him. He shows some real emotion when he gets the news, which tells me that he was prepared to be in the bottom. I don't think he deserved to be in the bottom, it's just that I'm still having trouble getting over his holier than thou attitude from a few weeks ago. Danny's outburst of happiness even surprises Cat and gets a giggle out of her. The bottom two guys are Dominic (as I predicted) and Kameron (not predicted, but not a surprise either).
Mia says that she's shocked at a couple of the bottom four, and says that she thought that Pasha was going to be in the bottom group. Nigel says that it's much easier now that the judges don't have to make the decision.
It's time for the solos, and it strikes me that without the meaningless solos and the twenty or so minutes of revisiting last night's dancing, the results show could easily be cut to a half hour. I know, that's ridiculous, but I can dream can't I?!?
The first solo is from Jamie.....
