So You Think You Can Dance: And The Winner Is....
Episode 22 Recap by Jenny Lane
August 17, 2007
Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, Lacey, Sabra, Neil and Danny danced their toes off! Everyone danced a group number, there were solos, and also every possible combination of pairs danced. Here's what we saw:
Group Broadway number by Tyce Diorio to a Cabaret song
Sabra and Neil - Hip Hop by Shane Sparks, not well liked by the judges
Lacey and Danny - Viennese Waltz by Jean-Marc Genereux, judges loved the effortless look
Sabra and Lacey - Wade Robson piece about a mother fox and her baby fox, not understood and not liked by the judges
Danny and Neil - Mia Michaels piece about two princes battling for the throne - rave reviews from the judges
Lacey and Neil - Lindy Hop by Nick Williams, not my cup of tea, but the judges thought it was entertaining and done well
Sabra and Danny - ChaCha by Melanie LaPatin, entertaining but technical criticisms from the judges
In addition to all of that, we saw everyone's solos, and interview with Cat and each of the four finalists.
Tonight I'm tearing myself away from the news coverage about the latest mining accident long enough to watch the two-hour finale. If you've read many of my articles, you know that I have a low tolerance level for long results shows. I fully expect this two-hour long extravaganza to be painfully long.
The show opens with Cat grabbing my full attention. My first observation is that for the second night in a row, she blends into the background in her burnt sienna number (my least favorite Crayola crayon). She's wearing a knee length strapless dress with a full skirt that would be passable if it was not for the mound of feathers or bunched up netting that has been stuck to her stomach! It doesn't go all the way around, it's only on her stomach area. Her hair is all braided and piled up on top of her head, and she's got something blue stuck in her hair. That has got to be one of the weirdest things I've ever seen, rivaling that anorexic woman from The Practice the year she wore that bizarre ballerina costume to the Oscars or Emmys or something.
Oh, speaking of which, thanks to those of you who e-mailed me to tell me that Danny's leaps are called Grand Jetes. Many years ago, I saw Baryshnikov dance, and that's the part of his performance that I remember the most. (That and when he put on a tutu and let one of the taller male dancers lift him up and over his head!)
All top twenty dancers are back, dressed all in white, and do the dancing introductions they way they have every week. Cat comes out, and now I'm sure that the stuff on her dress is netting. When she's standing there now, it doesn't look as weird as it did to begin with and isn't just stuck to her front. Maybe they tweaked it backstage a bit during the introductions.
Cat welcomes all of the judges tonight. Joining Nigel and Mary are Mia, Shane, Wade and Dan. No Debbie Allen tonight though. After all the judges talk about how wonderful the season is, Nigel introduces a few special guests in the audience. Paula Abdul is there, looking only half drugged but still a bit rumpled. There's also a girl named Claire who we met last season. She made it past the first auditions but then twisted her ankle. Nigel invited her to come back to try again, but she couldn't because she had a baby, and she's in the audience with her baby.
I'm sure that you can guess what's next. Yup, a look back on the season. First is a montage of the auditions, good and bad. Then we take a look at Vegas week, and then the top 20.
The first performance of the evening is all top 20 dancers performing Tyce Diorio's 'Lion King' routine. It's to "The Lioness Hunt" from the Broadway musical. Everyone is dressed in browns and oranges with poofy hair and face paint. I don't need to elaborate about the dance, it's exactly like you'd expect. The guys are shirtless and the girls might as well be, and beyond that it's a little bit of a yawn.
Throughout the show, all of the judges and some of the choreographers are going to tell us about their favorite routine of the season. Mary is first, and she says that seeing Cedric the first time was the most memorable for her. Her favorite routine was Lauren and Pasha's 'Transformer' routine by Shane Sparks. Of course, Lauren and Pasha are back to perform the routine again. That must be rough to have to dance something they learned weeks ago.
Next is a piece about all of the bad auditions they saw. We had already seen some, but now we get to see some more. Then Cat introduces our next performer, someone we met at the auditions. He's Brandon Norris, one of the only cloggers we've seen. He didn't make it to Vegas week, but he's here to clog to "The Way I Are" by Timbaland. (Timbaland isn't what I'd immediately envision as clogging music!) He actually is good and the dance is really fun to watch.
Nigel says that he'd like.....
