Real World - Road Rules Challenge: The Duel
Tina Attacks Beth - Will She Go Home?

Episodes 1 and 2 Recap by Jenny Lane
October 13, 2006

Last night was the first episode of the new season of Real World/Road Rules, and this season is referred to as "The Duel." TJ Lavin returns as the host, and MTV has brought the group to beautiful Brazil. Twenty competitors will participate in challenges, all hoping to get to the $300,000 prize at the end of the competition.

MTV is changing Real World/Road Rules format for us, and for the first time the team concept has been abolished and it will be every man (or woman) for themselves! This will put a whole new spin on things, and it will be interesting to see how this effects the normal scheming and alliance-making.

This years' competitors include some old favorites and some newer members:
Aneesa - Real World Chicago
Beth - Real World Los Angeles
Brad - Real World San Diego
Casey - Fresh Meat (For those of you who didn't watch last season, it included some competitors who had not been in Real World or in Road Rules. Those competitors, and the show itself, were called "Fresh Meat.")
CT - Real World Paris
Derrick - Road Rules X-Treme
Diem - Fresh Meat
Eric - Fresh Meat
Evan - Fresh Meat
Jodi - Road Rules X-Treme
John - Real World Key West
Kenny - Fresh Meat
Kina - Road Rules X-Treme
Nehemiah - Real World Austin
Paula - Real World Key West
Robin - Real World San Diego
Svetlana - Real World Key West
Tina - Road Rules South Pacific
Tyler - Real World Key West
Wes - Real World Austin

My first thought is, oh my goodness, where is Coral?!? Did her injury last season finally make her retire? I thought for sure she'd be in this until the end.

And now, it's time for the show! Tonight's show begins with various cast members arriving in Brazil and sizing each other up. Diem is back and says that her cancer has gone into remission (she competed in Fresh Meat, and at that time had recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer). Casey is back from her win on Fresh Meat and proudly announces that she used her prize money for a boob job, which she says is "the best purchase of my life." Classy.

Evan, also from fresh meat (he was Coral's partner) and says he's recovered from the hernia that took him out of the competition. Wes says that he and Johanna are still a couple, and he wants to win this money so that they can get married and start a life together. Robin has split with former boyfriend and co-competitor Mark, and is happy about being single for the show.

What would the season be without some drama? Never fear, Beth has come back again to provide us with drama and entertainment for the season. She says she'll keep coming back as long as she's asked back, and will keep making other people's lives "a living hell." Also with a flair for the dramatic, Paula is here and says she's "taking more ownership of her life." (She was quite the challenge of the Real World house, battling anorexia, an abusive boyfriend, and a low tolerance to alcohol.)

The cast jumps off the bus and runs into the house with the usual chaos. The house is gorgeous of course, and Evan calls it a "sex palace made for some serious hooking up!" Everyone jockeys for beds and bedrooms, and CT was able to find a big bed all for himself.

Next comes some speculation on the meaning of "The Duel." Does it mean two teams, two people, or something else? Time to find out!

Everyone leaves the house and after taking a walk, we see them climbing onto a tower of some sort, complete with torches and flames. Host T.J. Lavin is there to welcome them to "The Duel." T.J. tells them that in an effort to keep them on their toes, there will be no teams. Everyone will be on a solo mission from start to finish. The reaction seems to be positive overall, especially from the guys.

Each duel will be.....
