Real World - Road Rules Challenge: The Duel - It's Puzzling
Episodes 3 Recap by Jenny Lane
October 20, 2006
Previously on Real World/Road Rules - The Duel, the twenty competitors arrived in beautiful Brazil. Host T.J. Lavin shocked everyone when he announced that there would be no teams this season. Instead, it will be every individual for themselves, and in the end one male winner and one female winner will share a $300,000 prize.

In the first challenge called "Reaching Out," Robin and Eric managed to win the challenge, some prizes, and also safety. The schoolyard style pick to choose the first competitor in the duel revealed that the new kids on the block (Real World Key West) were being targeted by the rest. Tyler was picked as the first duel participant and in a surprise and some might say a strange choice, he chose castmate John to join him in the duel. Tyler was victorious and John was the first to be sent home.

In the next challenge called "Ring Toss," Kenny managed to outlast the other men and earned himself safety from the duel. After quite a bit of drama surrounding Diem and her wig/bandana, she gathered the courage to take her wig off and won the challenge, safety, and the respect of the other competitors.

As Diem basked in the glow of her newfound confidence, drama was brewing between Tina and Beth. After Beth encouraged Tina to escalate the fight, Tina loses what little composure she has left and takes a swing at Beth, landing her fist squarely on Beth's forehead.

Tonight we will find out what repercussions (if any) their fight has for Beth and Tina, and also if that has any impact on the next duel. Will Beth be sent home for clearly picking a fight? Will Tina be sent home for punching Beth?

Tonight's episode of Real World/Road Rules - The Duel begins with a replay of the Beth/Tina fight. A closeup of Beth's face reveals a teeny tiny scratch on the bridge of her nose. Tina tells the camera that "punching Beth is like punching a frozen piece of pig, but I know you didn't feel it because the Botox has got your face all frozen." (Now that I think about it, Beth has got to be getting up there in age.)

After the one punch, Beth and Tina walk away from each other and Tina says to the crowd, "You've all been wanting to do that forever! Beth, you started this about 20 years ago and if you're afraid of me, come over here." Remember, Beth is not known for her snappy comebacks and this time all she can say is "oh yah, I'm afraid of you…"

Host T.J. Lavin walks Tina away from the crowd and says, "You know you got to go home now, right?" I guess there's our answer. Tina says she knows, and it was worth the $150,000.

Back with the group, Beth is playing the victim role, whining and saying she didn't start anything. She tells us that she never lets people bully her and she's not going to let Tina intimidate her. As Tina says goodbye to the group, Beth sits pouting in the ambulance, holding a cold pack to her face.

Back to business. T.J. congratulates Kenny and Diem who won the challenge that now seems like it happened a million years ago. Since this is a female elimination day and Tina took herself out, there will be no duel today.

That night at the house, a clue for the next challenge arrives. "Tomorrow you will need to choose your steps wisely or victory may pass you by. Wear your bathing suits."

The challenge called "Pass With Care" is set at a marina. There are two platforms with a rope bridge suspended between them. Each person must make it from one platform to the other in the quickest amount of time. T.J. tells the guys to line up next to him and tells the girls to stay where they are. Since today is a duel day for the guys, T.J. says they can pick their girl partners. They are given one minute to go and stand by the person they want as their partner. This irritates Wes, who would rather be on his own than have some silly girl drag him down.

T.J. tells the guys to go find their partner and the guys take off. I couldn't tell if one girl seemed to have more guys heading for her than any others did, in fact the whole thing seemed to be pretty orderly. T.J. gives the final instructions. One teammate will start on each platform and will have to make their way to the other platform, passing each other in the middle. There is one red plank in the middle and both teammates must touch that plank before passing each other. Because the bridge is so unstable, teamwork will come into play. No sitting or kneeling is allowed, and using hands is not allowed. The girl who wins the challenge will win a digital projector, and the guy who wins will be safe from the duel.

Since Tyler won the last duel, he gets to pick.....
