Real World - Road Rules Challenge: The Duel
Get Ready To Jump!
Episodes 6 Recap by Jenny Lane
November 10, 2006
Previously on Real World/Road Rules - The Duel, Diem unveiled her post-cancer hairdo, much to CT's delight (he said she looked like a supermodel secret agent). Derrick and Beth won the challenge, so Derrick was safe from the Duel. The Duel selection left Nehemiah as the first competitor, and he chose Kenny to oppose him. Nehemiah outperformed Kenny in the Duel and Kenny was sent home.

Beth realized just how much people were targeting her, and she formed an unlikely alliance with Aneesa, Wes and Nehemiah. Beth and Nehemiah seemed to take their alliance to another level, and started getting extra snuggly with each other.

One of the girls will go home next. Will the other girls finally get their way and get rid of Beth? Will her romance with Nehemiah heat up and win them the strangest couple of reality tv award?

Tonight's episode begins with the girls (and some of the guys) putting on wigs to support Diem. They head out to a bar for some fun. CT and Diem get closer as they dance, and Diem says that CT "is a nice, respectable guy, and he looks like a Calvin Klein model…he's gorgeous."

Back at the house, Beth is scheming (of course). She tells Svetlana that "either you, me, Aneesa or Casey has to win tomorrow, ok?" I guess those are the girls that are not in "the group." Svetlana says "you always see Jodi, Robin and Kina giving each other advice. I feel that the girls will pick me so Aneesa and Beth are asking me to form an alliance so that we have each others' backs." Beth has the whole thing planned out, down to who they will each pick for the Duel.

The other girls are talking about Beth and how manipulative she is. Kina says "I hate Beth, she's masterminding this game. I would hope people would think twice before they put me in there because I won't go down quietly." CT tells them that it sounds to him like they're kind of afraid of Beth. They deny it, but not very convincingly.

The clue for the challenge arrives. "Don't jump to any conclusions about tomorrow's challenge, just be ready by 9:30 - jump!" Wes reminds the group that Casey hates heights, especially jumping. (She had a meltdown in the Fresh Meat season when she had to jump in one of the challenges.)

The next morning, everyone gets to the challenge site. It's next to the water and there is a huge crane with a metal contraption hanging from it. It looks like several ladder-sized pieces put together to form a big cube that you can climb around on. On the bottom of the cube there are two platforms on each side and an empty space between the platforms. The cube is hanging by each corner from the crane and is suspended above the water.

Host T.J. Lavin welcomes the group to the challenge called "Flying Leap." Two people will compete at a time. Each competitor will stand on one platform and jump to the other side to collect a flag, and then jump back to the other side. After three minutes, the person with the most flags will win. (It looks and sounds like something I saw on Fear Factor.)

The girl that wins will be safe from the Duel, and the guy that wins gets two airline tickets on Frontier Airlines. Since Nehemiah won the last Duel, he gets to decide the participation order and the pairings.

Eric and Brad are up first. To get to the other side, they have to jump so that they fall on their stomach, which seems to tire them out. We're not told how many flags they get yet. Wes and Nehemiah are next, followed by CT and Evan. CT is the only guy who is able to jump across without diving onto his stomach. Derrick is last and has to go by himself. He falls off with about 1 ˝ minutes left, and is the only guy who doesn't finish.

Kina and Jodi are first for the girls. Jodi falls off on her first jump and is out of the competition, but Kina does well. Diem and Svetlana are next, and Diem falls immediately. Beth and Casey are next. Casey clearly looks nervous before she starts. Beth makes her first jump and falls short. She tries to pull herself up but can't, and falls into the water. Casey sees Beth fall and decides that maybe she shouldn't even try. She stalls for all three minutes and ends up not trying to jump even once.

Aneesa and Robin are last, and Aneesa falls into the water on her first jump. After everyone finishes, Svetlana realizes that a flag was stuck to her swimming suit. She was able to use that flag, so we'll see, maybe she'll end up winning by only one flag!

T.J. gives the group the results. For the guys, Wes came in third with 27 flags, Evan came in second with 33 flags, and CT won the challenge with 35 flags.

For the girls, Kina and Robin both got 21 flags and Svetlana had - you guessed it - 22 flags! Beth is thrilled because one of "her group" won the challenge. Kina, Robin and Jodi clearly look upset.

Svetlana begins choosing to see who will be the first competitor in the Duel. Svetlana picks Wes (which shows the others that there is an alliance on the other side). Wes picks Aneesa, who picks Nehemiah, who picks Beth, who picks CT, who picks Kina. Wait, shouldn't he have picked his new love interest Diem? CT says he's "not worried about Diem going into the Duel right now, I'll pick Diem when she gives me the sign but until then, she's not going to get picked." Strange.

Kina picks Derrick, who picks Robin, who picks Brad, who picks Jodi. Jodi picks Evan, and then T.J. tells Eric he can join the others who are safe. Evan must then pick the last girl who is safe. He picks Diem, which means that Casey is the first girl in the Duel.

Casey says she'd love to break up Kina's alliance, and yet she has to think about who she should compete against. Casey chooses Robin as her opponent in the duel. She says she has a better chance against Robin if the Duel is geared against a "smaller girl." Casey chooses the game "Pole Wrestle" for the Duel.

At the Duel, Casey and Robin join T.J. This is the challenge where there is a short pole stuck in the center of a circle. Each person starts with on their knees holding the pole, and both try to wrestle it the pole of the other person's hands.

When the competition starts, Casey does well holding onto it for a while, and even seems like she may pull it out of Robin's hands. They get twisted up and Robin yanks the pole out of Casey's hands. Robin stays and Casey goes home.

Next time on the Duel, one of the guys goes home. It looks like the romance between Nehemiah and Beth is over, and another high-flying challenge is in store for the competitors.
