Real World - Road Rules Challenge: The Duel
Wes Takes Out Derrick
Episodes 8 Recap by Jenny Lane
December 1, 2006
Previously on Real World/Road Rules - The Duel, CT and Jodi won the "Rafty Race" challenge. CT won a prize and Jodi won safety from that night's Duel. Svetlana was last to be picked and was therefore the first competitor in the Duel. In a surprising move, Svetlana chose drama queen Beth as her opponent. Evan said it best, "Svetlana pulls out the most insane move of all time, OsamaBethLaden vs. the Russian wonder in the Cold War Duel." It has been no secret that just about everyone wanted Beth gone, but nobody thought that Svetlana would have the guts to be the first to try to oust Beth.
At that night's Duel Beth did outpower Svetlana and pushed her way to the winning flag. However, in a ruling by the referee, Beth was disqualified because she got the flag by ripping it rather than unclipping it as she was instructed. With Big Bad Beth disqualified, Svetlana was declared the winner of the Duel and Beth was sent packing.
This week's episode begins with Wes discussing the fact that he may be the next to go. Wes talks about the prize money with Diem, and says that if he wins, it will be enough to start a life with Johanna and he'll ask her to marry him. Wes tells us that the money "is a big ring and a big wedding and the start of a life."
A clue arrives which says "You think you're slick enough to win tomorrow's challenge? Be ready to slide out at nine a.m." (Right at that moment I realize that it's so strange that everyone is not rejoicing more after Beth's departure, in fact it doesn't even seem to be the topic of discussion!)
The next morning, Jodi and Derrick are talking, and Derrick says he thinks he might be the next to go. Jodi says everyone is getting paranoid and nobody is safe. CT and Diem are waiting for the others in the van. It's Diem's birthday and CT says that they should have a birthday cake and he will run around in his birthday suit. Then he thinks of a better idea, he'll be her slave for the evening. Diem tells us that she's having a great time with CT but since it's a guys' Duel day, she's nervous and doesn't want him to go.
The group arrives at the challenge site. It's on a huge sandy area (not a beach, more like a sand dune), and there are two twenty-foot tall poles stuck in the sand. The poles are all greased up with something, and each pole has a flag stuck to the top of it. The poles are at the top of a small hill (I guess it is a sand dune) and on the side of the hill going down are several rectangular mats. Behind the poles there are big banners/flags, each with one person's name on it.
Host T.J. Lavin welcomes the group to the challenge called "Pole Dance." There are two legs of the challenge so there will be two teams. CT and Eric are going to be the captains because CT won the last challenge and Eric won the last Duel. There will be three guys and three girls on each team. As a team, they have to make their way up the pole to retrieve the flag on the top. The team who gets their flag first moves on to the second round of the challenge.
The second leg of the challenge has the three guys competing against each other, and same for the three girls. Everyone will run through the sand dunes, using signs along the way to direct them. The end of the course is an uphill climb in which they have to go over the big rectangular mats that I mentioned earlier. The mats are slippery, so it will be hard to climb uphill over the slippery mats. At the top of the hill are two flags, one for the guys and one for the girls. The one guy and one girl who get to the flag first win. The guy wins safety from tonight's Duel and the girl wins a car audio system.
Svetlana says "oh it would be so nice to win the prize but it's Diem's birthday so wouldn't it be nice if she won." I'm wondering if this will be the second challenge that the girls "help" Diem win, and I am also wondering if Diem will ever get voted out since the girls seem to have such a soft spot for her.
It's time to pick teams. CT picks Diem (of course), Eric picks Jodi, CT picks Wes, and Eric picks Derrick (Derrick thinks this is a good thing because he thinks he can easily beat Eric in the second leg of the race). CT picks Robin, Eric picks Kina, and CT picks Evan. Eric picks Brad, CT picks Svetlana, which leaves Aneesa for Eric's team.
Each person stands in front of the flag with their name on it. When T.J. starts the challenge, everyone runs up to their team's pole and starts figuring a way to get to the top. Right away, the guys are hoisting the girls up.
Over at CT's team, Robin and Svetlana get on the guys' shoulders, and then they try to get Diem on top of them. Of course the pole is slippery (it looks like Crisco was rubbed all over the poles) and that makes things difficult. Diem does make it up and balances on the other two girls' arms/shoulders. She is then able to easily reach up and grab the flag. The other team never even got close to the top.
The second leg of the race begins.....
