Treasure Hunters And A Touchdown
Real World - Road Rules Challenge: The Duel
Episode 13 Recap by Jenny Lane
January 5, 2007
Previously on Real World/Road Rules - The Duel, Evan and Jodi won the Ice Breaker challenge. Svetlana was the first person picked for the Duel, and she chose Kina as her opponent. In a surprise victory, Svetlana overpowered Kina in the Duel, sending Kina home. We're down to eight competitors, each with their eye on the $150,000 prize money. Which guy will be eliminated tonight!
Tonight's episode begins with Wes and Evan cautiously strategizing. I say cautious because they both are wary of their trust for each other, but realize that they may need each other to move forward. Evan says CT is the only thing standing in his way of the $150,000, and that he's confident he can beat the other guys. Wes wants the other guys to choose amongst each other to "get the big guys out."
CT and Diem are in one of the bedrooms, and Diem is giggling as she spreads some sort of frosting or something on him. (Why why WHY don't these reality shows ever insist that people put sheets on the beds!!) Diem decides to make me gag and says, while giggling, "I guess I just really like CT as dorky as that sounds." Yes, it does sound dorky. CT says it's Diem and him "against the rest of 'em."
A clue arrives and it says "Take a deep breath, you are not done yet. The next challenge should be fun, be ready to leave by 8:30 a.m." The next morning, everyone piles in the vans and heads to the challenge. Host T.J. is waiting for them with a BMW motorcycle sitting next to him.
Today's challenge is called "Sunken Treasure." Everyone will get into teams of two, and since it's a guy's Duel day, the guys get to choose their partners. T.J. gives the guys 30 seconds to pick their partners. CT chooses Diem, Wes chooses Svetlana, Brad chooses Aneesa and Evan chooses Jodi.
When the challenge begins, both teammates will jump into the water and dive down to an "oxygenated bell" under the surface. (It looks like a big tank, the kind that they use on Fear Factor or in magic acts.) After taking a deep breath, one person will swim down to an anchor. On the anchor is 12 digits, broken up into three groups of four digits. Those three codes are the combinations to three locks. The other person needs to remember those numbers, dive down to a treasure chest and unlock the locks. When the locks are opened, a ball will float to the surface and the time will stop. Only one person is allowed to go to each of the two destinations, so if the team has one strong swimmer, that person can't do everything. There is also a 15 minute time limit, if it takes longer than that, the team is disqualified.
The guy member of the winning team wins safety from tonight's Duel. The girl wins, you guessed it, the BMW motorcycle. Svetlana was the last female Duel winner, so she gets to decide the team order. CT and Diem will go first, followed by Evan and Jodi, then Brad and Aneesa, and she and Wes will go last.
CT and Diem jump into the pool. It's actually a pretty small pool, and they don't even need any special equipment, unless you call the gross Speedo that CT is wearing 'equipment.' Remember, Diem is a great swimmer, so this should be interesting. They both get to the oxygen tank quickly. Diem takes a breath and dives down to the anchor. After taking a very quick look, she goes back up. She tells CT that she can't find the numbers, so CT says he'll go and look. CT swims down to the anchor but it doesn't look like he makes it all the way down. It looks like he comes back up for a breath and goes back down again.
At the surface, T.J. sees that both Diem and CT have swam down to the anchor, so he sounds the airhorn and has them come back up to the surface. He tells them that they're disqualified because they both went to the same destination. CT says he knew about the rule and it was a stupid mistake.
Evan and Jodi are next......
