Real World - Road Rules Challenge: The Duel
Episode 16 Recap by Jenny Lane
January 19, 2007
Previously on Real World/Road Rules - the Duel, Jodi and Wes won the 'Paddle Me' challenge, securing a spot for both of them in the finals. That left Svetlana and Diem, and CT and Brad for the double Duel that night. In the guys' Duel, CT had a meltdown and blew up after getting disqualified for ripping, not unclipping, the flag. Aneesa overestimated her strength, and was not able to lift the number of logs she thought she could. Aneesa and CT went home, and Svetlana and Brad advanced to the finals. Tonight is the finale and there is a total prize of $300,000 up for grabs. Who will win - Svetlana or Jodi, and Brad or Wes?
Tonight's final episode begins at the house, where the final four are celebrating their success. Svetlana wants to use the money for med school, Jodi wants to contribute to charities (?), Brad wants to put the money into his business, and Wes has said that he wants to start a life with his girlfriend Johanna. The clue arrives and reads "tomorrow is your final challenge, be ready to leave at 6:45 a.m."
The next morning, the final four pack up and go to their final challenge. A helicopter arrives to whisk them away, and they head to Rio de Janeiro. After they land, T.J. greets them and tells them about their final challenge, 'The Rio Deal." The first part of the challenge starts with a footrace through the mountains. Along the course, there will be several small challenges. At the end of the course there are two flags, one for the guys and one for the girls. The first guy and girl to the flags get a ride to the finish line, and the other person has to walk. (That seems very odd…maybe it will make more sense later.) The first guy and girl to cross the finish line win the money.
Before the challenge begins, everyone gets the chance to win a two-minute head start on their opponent. There is a soccer goal set up and each person will have five chances to kick soccer balls into the goal while their opponent guards the goal. The guy and girl who gets the most goals wins the head start. Wes and Jodi get to decide if they will kick or defend first because they won the last challenge. Jodi decides to defend first, so Svetlana is kicking first. She misses the first shot, makes the second goal, misses the third, fourth and last shots. Svetlana makes one goal, so Jodi only needs to get two. Jodi is up next and Svetlana is guarding. Jodi is a terrible kicker, and misses the first three shots. She makes the fourth one (barely) so it comes down to the last one, which she makes in. Jodi wins the two-minute head start.
Wes decides to defend first, so Brad is kicking. Brad misses the first, second, third and fourth. It's more because Wes is a good blocker than because Brad can't kick. Brad is able to get the last goal, so he has one, which doesn't sound too encouraging because Wes has a lot of soccer experience. Wes is up, and he is really confident that it won't be a problem to win. Wes gets the first and second goals easily, which is enough to give him the two-minute head start.
The group gathers at the start of the footrace, and Wes and Jodi get to use their two-minute head start. They take off, leaving Svetlana and Brad to stress about it while they wait. The trail is steep and rough, and it's hard to run quickly. Svetlana and Brad finally get to start at about the same time that Jodi gets to her first challenge.
The first challenge is a puzzle which says "Stage 1: Brazilian Blocks - These four cubes must be carried, one at a time, up the hill and placed in the puzzle tray. Once all four of your cubes are in the tray, you may begin solving the puzzle." The "Brazilian Blocks" puzzle consists of four cubes which make up one large cube. Each smaller cube has a different colored circle on each side. Brad gets to the cube challenge and realizes that Wes and Jodi have both already moved their pieces. Svetlana has a hard time making it to the puzzle challenge, and has an even harder time carrying the blocks up the hill.
Once all four pieces are.....
