Celebrity Duets: She's Got The Legs But Not The Voice
Episode 3 Recap by Jenny Lane
September 9, 2006
Thursday night on Celebrity Duets, the seven remaining celebrities sang duets with various recording artists. The judges, Marie Osmond, David Foster and the always confusing Little Richard, offered feedback to the celebrities. After the show, the viewers were given the chance to vote for their favorite celebrity. Tonight, the celebrity with the fewest number of votes will be eliminated from the competition.
Tonight's results show begins with Wayne Brady introducing a recap of last night's duets. Here's a quick recap of what everyone sang:
Hal Sparks got the "least steamy love song duo" award when he sang "I Want to Know What Love Is" with Wynona, and the judges didn't have anything bad to say about his performance. Lea Thompson sang "Heaven is a Place on Earth" with Belinda Carslisle, and while Little Richard may not have been thrilled with her singing, he loved Lea's legs! Cheech Marin sang a mystery country song with Clint Black, and David still is not convinced he's going to do well in the competition. Alfonso Ribeiro performed "On the Wings of Love" with Jeffrey Osborne, and the judges thought he did well interacting with the audience.
Carly Patterson sang "I'm so Excited" with Anita Pointer, and the judges seemed to think she better than last week. Jai Rodriguez, recovering from a cold, sang "One" with Brian McKnight and the judges gave him rave reviews. Lastly, Lucy Lawless performed "Whenever I call you Friend" with Kenny Loggins, and Marie noticed that she had missed some of her words.
Next the seven remaining contestants all are onstage to perform "One Way or Another." It's very high school/American Idol. I don't personally care for the group numbers, but I understand that they need to use up time somehow.
Whew, the group number's over and I can turn my volume back up. Wayne introduces the judges (Marie Osmond, Little Richard and David Foster). When asked what her favorite moment of last night's show was, Marie says that she loved when Clint Black played the harmonica, and also when Wynona grabbed Hal Sparks and pulled him in (not hard for her to do!) for a kiss. Wayne commented that he thought Wynona was a bit scary and Marie jumped to her defense and said, she might scare you but she wouldn't scare me!
Next, Wayne asks Little Richard what his favorite moment of last night's show was. I stopped for a moment, paused the tv, took a gulp of diet coke and prepared for the babbling to ensue. Little Richard says that he enjoyed "the lady with the Tina Turner legs but not with the Tina Turner voice." Wayne asked Richard if that comment was meant as a slam towards Lea or a backhanded compliment, and Richard said no, it was a compliment, and not backhanded, I use the front hand! Richard then said that his favorite moment was Jai and Bryan McKnight. Bravo Richard, I understood every word of that!
David Foster echoes my sentiment and says, "Wouldn't you know that tonight Richard would be so clear and he took my favorite moment, which was also Jai and Bryan McKnight."
Ok, that's enough of the judges for now. Wayne tells us that throughout the night (this show is an hour long - oh boy) the singers will learn the voting results. In addition, the celebrities will sing new duets with their recording artist partners.
Lucy Lawless and Kenny Loggins are up first. We're shown a taped piece of them rehearsing, and Kenny doesn't cut Lucy any slack and makes her work hard. He says that she's got a pretty voice and he thinks she'll do well.
Tonight Lucy and Kenny sing "Footloose." Lucy looks like a stripper/flapper with a short white fringed dress. I can't say how she sounded because I'm too distracted by her go-go dancing to listen to her voice. Kenny sounds great though! When the song's done, Lucy gives Kenny a quick kiss and a hug, and Wayne tells Kenny that every man wants to be Kenny's guitar right now! Wayne asks Lucy where her head is right now, and Lucy says she feels good and wants to stay around. The judges don't get to weigh in on this performance which is just as well, because given Lucy's outfit, I can only imagine what Little Richard would have said!
Wayne has a card in his hand and he's going to tell us if she's safe or in the bottom three. After the obligatory stalling, Wayne says that she's safe this week.
Carly Patterson and Anita Pointer are next. The taped piece shows Carly with a new resolve to work hard. She says she loved working with Anita (well, who wouldn't?) and Anita says that Carly did a good job and just might surprise everyone.
Carly and Anita sing "Jump." I'm personally not a big Carly fan. I think she was a great gymnast and I have a huge amount of respect for the fact that she went to the Olympics and all, but I just don't care for her singing or her performing. I also think that this is magnified by the fact that she's singing next to Anita Pointer, who looks and sounds fantastic. (Please all you Carly fans, no hate mail!)
Wayne asks how the pressure.....
