Jenny Lane Celebrity Duets: "No More Talk Of Pushing And Pulling!"

Episode 4 Recap by Jenny Lane
September 15, 2006

Previously on Celebrity Duets, the seven remaining celebrities sang duets with various recording artists. The judges offered feedback to the celebrities. After the viewers voted for their favorite celebrities, Lea Thompson received the lowest number of votes and became the second celebrity to be eliminated from the competition (joining Chris Jericho who was the first to be eliminated).

Last week on Celebrity Duets, Lucy Lawless, Hal Sparks, Alfonso Ribeiro and Jai Rodriguez received positive reviews from the judges and also enough votes from viewers to move on. Carly Patterson and Cheech Marin joined Lea Thompson in the bottom three after the votes were counted. Tonight, the six celebrities left in the competition will sing duets with new recording stars.

Wayne Brady opens the show and reminds us that we need to vote for our favorite celebrity to ensure they remain in the show. Then he introduces the judges, Marie Osmond, David Foster and Little Richard (who, I must admit, is growing on me). This week the show is shorter than last week so Wayne seems to be in a hurry to get things started.

Lucy Lawless opens tonight's show. Lucy was intimidated by the prospect of singing with this recording artist. While she wanted to sing with a female singer, she was not prepared to sing with such a huge star, and what Lucy described as such a "diva."

Lucy comes out dressed more subdued than in previous weeks and sings "Say a Little Prayer for You." For the record, not only did I identify the song in five notes or less, I also was able to figure out that her partner had to be none other than Dionne Warwick before Dionne even appeared! Dionne looks and sounds a little shaky but receives a standing ovation the second she hits the stage. And, speaking as someone who grew up with Solid Gold, it's great fun to see her.

Apparently there isn't even enough time to ask Dionne Warwick anything, because she is shooed off the stage as soon as the song is done. Marie Osmond tells Lucy that she seemed timid and her feeling of intimidation showed. Little Richard says "I Love Lucy!" Then adds that she's been "in the kool aid but doesn't know the flavor"?!? and she needs to "get out of the rhythm and get some blues." David Foster says he "kind of liked it" and that he gives her credit because she's been stuck with more genres than any of the other celebrities.

Alfonso Ribeiro is next to sing. He tells us that he's got to step it up to compete against Jai. Now he's got a sore throat from working it so hard, so it will be interesting to see how he performs tonight.

Alfonso, looking quite dapper in a silver and gray suit, sings "Too Much Too Little Too Late" with Denise Williams. His voice sounds pretty good, and I wouldn't have known he had a sore throat. The two of them also sing well together.

Marie tells Alfonso that he has great endings to his songs, but that he needs to stop the bouncing movement and also remember that he's singing a duet, not a solo. Little Richard says his "big toe shot up again and it was really something!" (which rendered poor Alfonso speechless) He also advised Alfonso to not let his "voice write a check that his rhythm can't cash," and then he kind of lost me when he said something like "hold it on and hold it in, keep on punchin and keep on pushing and put that voice where you got that rhythm and you can't miss and you can't miss and you won't miss!" Whew! David says that he had a great last note but then slapped Alfonso's wrist by telling him to never EVER whine about being sick!

Carly Patterson is up next. She says it's a new experience to get the feedback from the judges in a form other than a numerical score, as in gymnastics. This week she's thrilled to sing with this artist and she hopes to grow even more. She then informs us that she wants to "be a singer." (Maybe she's taking the "you've improved" comments just a little too seriously?)

Tonight she's singing with.....
