Celebrity Duets: One More Eliminated - Five Remain
Episode 5 Recap by Jenny Lane
September 16, 2006
Thursday night on Celebrity Duets, the six remaining celebrities (Hal Sparks, Jai Rodriguez, Lucy Lawless, Cheech Marin, Alfonso Ribeiro and Carly Patterson) sang duets with recording artists. The judges, Marie Osmond, David Foster and Little Richard, offered their feedback to the celebrities. After the show, viewers voted for their favorite celebrity. Tonight, the celebrity with the fewest number of votes will be eliminated from the competition.
Tonight's results show begins with a reminder of what the celebrities sang last night. Host Wayne Brady mentions that the it's a real dream to have the opportunity to sing alongside music's biggest stars. (Jesse McCartney is one of music's biggest stars?) Then we are shown a look at the judges and how they were harsher with their comments than they had been in the past.
Last night, Hal Sparks "tore up the stage" when he sang "Come Sail Away" with Dennis DeYoung, but judge David Foster rained on Hal's parade when he told Hal that he's "not a rock star." Jai Rodriguez, who sang "Tell it to my Heart" with Taylor Dayne, got mixed reviews for the first time and David even went so far as to say that his performance was "a big miss." Lucy Lawless' intimidation of Dionne Warwick showed as the two sang "Say a Little Prayer."
Cheech Marin was told by David that he doesn't belong in the competition anymore after he sang "Ain't no Sunshine" with Aaron Neville. Alfonso Ribeiro (whose name I can finally spell), who sang "Too Much Too Little Too Late" with Denise Williams, was told that while the ending was good, parts of his performance could have been better.
After declaring her desire to be a professional singer, Carly Patterson sang "Beautiful Soul" with teen idol Jesse McCartney. Marie told Carly that her performance was stiff, but David came to Carly's defense and said she did well. This performance was the subject of the majority of the e-mails I received today. Apparently many of you joined me in wondering what a teen idol was doing onstage with people like Dionne Warwick and Dennis DeYoung!
Through it all, Little Richard spoke of things like kool aid flavors, pushing and pulling, having rhythm and finding blues, horses and buggies, voices writing checks and toes shooting up! Sadly, we will have to do without him tonight, as he has a prior engagement and will not be on tonight's show.
Next, the six perform their high school musical rendition of the Earth, Wind and Fire hit, "September."
Wayne asks Marie (who needs to fire her hairdresser immediately) who she feels will be eliminated tonight. She says that David Foster should be, after his comments to Hal last night. Then Marie adds that she thinks Cheech might be the one to be eliminated, but she hopes it's not Alfonso because he's "delivering every show."
David says that Jai had been the judges' favorite, but he slipped a little last night. He thinks Carly had struggled but she came up a bit last night. David claims he has no idea who will be voted off, but that he's excited to find out.
Wayne introduces the next segment by saying that chemistry between the singers is important, and Jai had great chemistry with his partner, Taylor Dayne. They are both fans of the other and got along great. Jai had reservations about the songs because he felt they were written for a woman. During their rehearsals, they changed the songs to accommodate Jai's concerns and "make the song killer for a man to sing."
Tonight, Jai and Taylor perform "Love will Lead You Back." For the first time, I was not impressed with Jai's performance. He seemed nervous and even a little uncomfortable.
After the performance, Wayne reminds Jai that the judges were tough on him last night. Jai says he's confused, because it's been challenging and he thought he had been doing well. Next, Wayne opens the envelope containing the voting results for Jai and tells him that America disagreed with the judges and Jai is safe!
Carly Patterson is next. We're shown how starstruck she was to be singing with Jesse McCartney. She talks about how hot she thinks he is. Jesse says he's never sung his songs as a duet and likes the way they sound with a female voice.
Carly and Jesse sing.....
