Previously on Celebrity Duets, the six remaining celebrities sang duets with recording artists. Judges Marie Osmond, Little Richard and David Foster offered their feedback. After viewers voted for their favorites, Carly Patterson became the next celebrity to be eliminated from the competition (joining Chris Jericho and Lea Thompson).
Last week on Celebrity Duets, Cheech Marin was in the bottom three for the second time. Hal Sparks, who had previously been getting positive feedback, also found himself in the bottom three. Tonight, Hal and Cheech will try to change their luck. Also performing tonight will be Lucy Lawless (who received the most audience votes last week), Alfonso Ribeiro and Jai Rodriguez.
Host Wayne Brady opens tonight's show and tells us that this show is critical because it will determine which celebrities will be in the finale. After tonight's voting, not one, but two of the celebrities will be eliminated.
Wayne introduces the judges next. Marie waves a creepy baby picture on a stick, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a picture of one of her kids or maybe one of the dolls that she creates. In any case, it's creepy. Speaking of creepy, Little Richard is back after his short absence last week. The last judge is David Foster, who Wayne says can "make albums easier than he can make friends."
Now it's time for the performances. Jai Rodriguez had done well at first, but then his confidence took a dip after last week's performances with Taylor Dayne. Last week, Jai said he was unsure of the songs because he felt they were geared so strongly for a woman's voice. This week, Jai says the performer he is paired with is a "dream come true and a curse, and it will be even harder than last week because she's so strong vocally." We also see that Jai doesn't read music which stuns me, given the fact that he has performed on Broadway.
Tonight Jai is singing "Lady Marmalade" with Patti LaBelle. At least I think that's the name of the song - remember, they don't tell us that. It's that song from Moulin Rouge. This song is much better for Jai than the songs he sang last week. I have to mention though, that although he is usually impeccably dressed, tonight Jai is wearing a very odd outfit complete with a little beret, shirt unbuttoned more than halfway, and suspenders (I doubt Carson from Queer Eye would approve).
After the song, Marie Osmond tells Jai that he "killed it." Then before she can continue, David Foster announces that he wants to go first. David tells Jai that he just realized he's been judging based on "his world" but that if he looks at the performance in "Jai's world," then Jai "killed it." Which to me is just David saying that he's better than everyone else and he needed to lower his standards in order to find anything positive to say.
Little Richard says that Jai made him "scream like a white woman!" He then added something about Jai being on the top of it and in the middle of it and pushing and pulling and going there. I'm not sure what he meant, and I don't think Jai knows either, but it all sounded positive.
Lucy Lawless is next to perform. She says it's hard to be in first place in the audience voting because it's hard to maintain that position. We also see a clip of her taking some time to play with her kids.
Lucy comes out in a black dress with a bunch feathers or something on the bottom half. She sings "Right Here Waiting" with Richard Marx. He looks fantastic and has certainly aged well.
Marie (who must have convinced David that she should go first) tells Lucy that it was nice to hear her sing a song and then finish it. She also says Lucy should have made more of a connection with Richard Marx onstage. Little Richard says "the beauty is still on duty and don't you forget it, and keep it on your paper and I know what I'm talking about because my name is judge (fill in the blanks here, I missed some) and I like the way you walk and it was beautiful and I loved it." David says that the song worked for her and she did well.
Last week, Hal enjoyed singing with Dennis DeYoung, but the judges and the voters didn't agree. Hal says that his first thought was that maybe David Foster "doesn't know rock, at least not the kind of rock I like." Hal then goes so far as to say that even though David says he's not a rock star, he knows in his heart that he is. Then we see a clip of him singing in a club in L.A. last week. This week, Hal is singing with one of his heavy metal idols.
Hal comes out complete with.....
