Jenny Lane Celebrity Duets: Talent Goes Home, The Popular Survive

Episode 7 Recap by Jenny Lane
September 23, 2006

The week on Celebrity Duets, the five remaining celebrities (Jai Rodriguez, Lucy Lawless, Hal Sparks, Cheech Marin and Alfonso Robeiro) sang duets with recording artists and judges Marie Osmond, Little Richard and David Foster offered their feedback. Tonight, two of the five celebrities will be eliminated and the three left standing will advance to next week's finale! The winner of the finale will win $100,000 to be donated to their favorite charity.

Hal tried to prove he can rock by singing/screaming a duet with Dee Snyder of Twisted sister fame. Jai sang his heart out with Patti LaBelle. Cheech showed he could sing jazz when he sang with Al Jarreau. Lucy's duet with Richard Marx got positive comments from the judges. Alfonso's duet with Chaka Kahn brought back memories for David foster and for me too!

Wayne Brady introduces the five contestants and they come out for their group number. Tonight the group sings "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."

Next it's time for the judges to weigh in on who they think will advance to the finale. Marie Osmond says Lucy, Jai and Alfonso (wait, wasn't that what I predicted too?). Little Richard predicts it will be Alfonso, Jai and Hal. David Foster says he wishes he could say Cheech but he can't, and he agrees with Marie (and me!).

Alfonso was paired with Chaka Kahn this week, and she was able to help him stay focused. Tonight, Alfonso and Chaka Kahn perform "Ain't Nobody." After the performance, Wayne asks Alfonso how it felt to perform last night's song in front of David foster, who wrote the song. Alfonso said he felt he needed to go for it and not be afraid. Wayne brings up the Carlton dance again, which Alfonso agreed to do if he gets into the finals.

Cheech Marin had the opportunity this week to sing with jazz legend Al Jarreau. Tonight, they are singing "Roof Garden" which gives the two a chance to do quite a bit of improvisation. Cheech does a good job holding his own with Al Jarreau. Wayne asks Cheech what he did to have more fun this week. It seems Cheech has been spending too much time around Little Richard, because he mumbles something about Marie and can't get enough of your love and then laughs!

Hal Sparks, who sang with Dee Snyder this week, is next. In rehearsals, Dee persuaded everyone to put down the piano keys and take up his version of rock. Tonight Hal and Dee perform "I Wanna Rock." It sounds like last night and honestly I'm a little tired of it. In fact I have to admit that even though I grew up with Twisted Sister, I fast forwarded through some of the song tonight. Wayne asks Hal how important it was to perform rock this week. Hal says it wasn't, because rock was what put him in the bottom three so he was worried less about the genre and more about being true to himself.

Wayne asks the judges how the celebrities who make it into the finals should prepare for next week. Marie says that the bar will be raised even higher, and it's all about television and presentation. Richard says the grass may look greener on the other side but it's just as hard to cut! David says the singers must push the musicians to make the song their own.

This week, Lucy Lawless worked with Richard Marx. Tonight they're performing "Should've Known Better." Wayne tells Lucy that she seems much more at ease than she did in the beginning. Lucy tells him how both Dionne Warwick and Richard Marx helped her to find her comfort zone.

Last to perform tonight is Jai Rodriguez, who is paired with Patti LaBelle. They are singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Wayne asks Jai how he feels this week. Jai says the competition has been fast paced but it all came to a head this week with Patti LaBelle and it was amazing.

The five celebrities come onstage for the results. Two of the five celebrities will be leaving the competition and the remaining three will be in the finale next week. Wayne calls Cheech, Hal and Alfonso and asks them to stand by him. Lucy and Jai are left standing on the other side of the stage, looking pretty nervous. Wayne tells Alfonso that he is safe, he will be singing in next week's finale. Next, Wayne tells Cheech that he is going home. Hal goes and joins Lucy and Jai while Cheech says his goodbyes.

We're left with Lucy, Jai and Hal. One of them will be going home and the other two will be in the finale. Wayne asks the judges who they think will go home. Marie says Hal, David says Jai and Richard seems to have disappeared!

Wayne says "Hal, it's been great having you with us and you've had a great run, and we look forward to you continuing your great run next week, we'll see you in the finale."

We're left with Lucy and Jai, only one of them will go on. Wayne reminds us that Lucy received the most votes last week and then tells Jai that the week before that, he had received the most votes. Wayne says, "The person leaving the competition right now is Jai." Jai looks very sad and Lucy looks a little stunned. I must admit, I'm a little sad too.

Next week Lucy, Hal and Alfonso will sing in the two night finale of Celebrity Duets!
